Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

I have no problems with this at all.
I Also have no problem with Program Changes what so ever. No Delay. I use a Motif Rack, Turbo Phat, Audity 2k, Orbit, and a V-synth.
I even hook up to a MOTU XT, and still no problems.

Bop! I understand your concern very well! This **** is **** annoyn! It drove me  for month! I have now retried what you were sayin and i m most times usin the effects at my rack anyway and in my case it works fine now!

I don’t use program changes either! … and exactly therefore: switch the **** pgm change off! You don’t need it! especially hit the window button on prg change field at track field and set parameter transmit pgm change in this track = no! even if it may not solve your prob it doesn't hurt you! (I did it now on all tracks! … and set it to autoload! you can always switch it back on once you need it!)

Further: try to switch all unneeded midi **** off! On the mpc as well as on your rack module! For example on my unit (virus b) on the virus all pgm changes, multi pgm changes are switched off!

What I also did (maybe this is a cause of your prob): I disconnect midi cables if not neeced! before I always had midi out mpc connected to midi in virus! And vice versa to record cc messages on the mpc! Try to disconnect the midi out of your rack to your midi in at the mpc (to avoid to send unneeded midi messages from your rack to the mpc and back to your rack again!) And just connect it if your recordin cc messages!

Hope you get your things together! Good luck!

hy aprim!

it s good to know that it is workin fine! but i thought maybe its because of your setup! your usin several modules! i just use the virus as an external synth in my midi setup (and some external fx's but they don't have to do anything with this prob)!

what i want to say/ask: the virus in my case really has a lot to do! most times i m sendin 4,5,6 (and if i exagerate it can also be 10) tracks at the same thime to the virus! if that one gets out of polyphony i ve got to sample sounds from the virus to have them on my tracks!

probably you use your modules better or (how to say? ... sorry my english) not as much, since you can take one sound from one module and some from the other ones! i wonder how many sounds from one module (esp. virus) can/do you take contemporaneously (also applyin pgm changes)?

could help me! i gave up with pgm changes completely since i solved this annoyn problem! maybe i could rearrange somethin in my midi settings/setup to also be able to use this bloody pgm change!

cheers

BeBop wrote:Verify in fact that it's working by slowing down the BPM of your sequence and make sure the "delay" effect follows too by slowing down in porportion.

Now, my problem is that when using this technique, I get this snapping sound with the bounce of the delay (1/4, 1/2 note ..whatever)pop,pop,pop,pop,

It's a feedback loop of some kind...
Nah... sounds like novation's delay's glitchin' when changin' delay time and da pop's repeated in the delay.
BeBop wrote:Now, the way around this is to not use the the external clock source on the synth, and rely on the internal, which you set the correct BPM to match your song.

But, this way does'nt allow for a really tight sound you can get by the technique layed out above...nor does it allow you to do gradual tempo changes and have the delay follow -
When ya change delay time or BPM on the novation while it's playin', d'ya get pops too?

I used the Virus C in my set up for a while.
The Virus is a great piece of gear, you should have this working no problem.
Every once in a while I had to Reset to factory defaults on the virus when it would start acting crazy. It would layer sounds (when it was set to multi) and I couldn't change the midi channel without changing all the sounds. But with the new OS 6 (VIRUS) Its work great. I run lots of tracks from the virus, you should worry too much about 6 or even 10 different sounds on different tracks.
Program Change should not be causing any problems if used correctly.
Make sure you look for the LSB and MSB numbers in your manual and this should be a piece of cake.

Bank change = on
MSB = 0
LSB = 0 through 5

Works the same on the EMU modules.
Make sure if you are loading a Auto Seq that there is no midi information recorded on a track that is screwing up ever time you load your auto sequence.
If you have the output of the virus set up into the MPC (to record incoming midi messages) make sure you not sending your midi clocks or any other midi messsages that may be freaking out the MPC.
Check to see if anything in coming into the MPC by looking at the MIDI INPUT.

Let me knw if that helps.

No doctor..I get no pops when I just turn ext synch off and control the delay time with a Knob on the Novation.

It's weird.

Thank for checkin' in bro-

Hey Aprim and Alto...thanks for checkin' in again. I'm gonna try those suggestions...but it's just weird. It definitley is some kind of midi message it seems ...that's looping back.

Gonna clean the slate and start with a new sequence with everything off -

I'll let you know,

Maybe there's a MIDI loop responsible for all of this?

To find out, make sure that only the MIDI In socket of the synth is connected. Simply unplug all other MIDI cables from the synth and try again.
