Maximum hard drive size?

Feline1 is of course correct, always disconnect the power cable when you mess with stuff inside. If you need to try something when the you have the MPC open, connect the power cable, turn it on, try what you want, turn it off and then disconnect the power cable right away. I take these things for granted, but some people have a life and don't mess with these things regularly.

BTW you can connect this fan to the same power cable as the hard drive or CD.

Thanks guys, as soon as the fan gets to me from the states I may have to call on your expertise.
Looking forward to having a near silent mpc4k,

I just formatted an external Maxtor 500GB in my 4k and everything seems cool.I think you guys might wanna know.

I have a 250 GB internal hard drive in my 4000. I had to format it in the PC for it to recognize the whole drive. When I tried formating it in the MPC it only recognized about 160 gb (not sure of the exact amount since I did this a couple of years ago.)

I also put the drive in the PC to back it up since AKSYS takes so long with USB 1.0.

I've tried a 200 GB external Maxtor with no problems as well. Does anyone know whether the higher RPM, larger cache, or perpendicular platter drives drive make any difference in performance as in seek & write times, etc ?

They shouldn't really matter as the part that makes the MPC 4000 load slowly is the OS itself.
I seem to remember Akai (maybe through Shawn when he was on the Forum...) saying that
the 4000 does a number of integrity checks when loading in items to make sure they were loaded
correctly, and that is partly due to the reason the loads are so slow.... So you can speed up the
disk speed but won't most likely see any improvements, as the lowest common denominator is
the OS itself and the processor.... remember the processor on the 4k is a Intel ARM processor

well i ve updated my drive to the 80gb akai approved wd model, BUT i m still trying to use more than 10 gb
I think 80 is just enough !

Interesting, I thought you couldn't use a drive unless it was formatted by the mpc. This is cool to know man.

I wonder if formatting the drive prior installing it into the MPC also makes a difference for general recognition of the harddisk. When installing a 2,5" into my MPC only 1 of 4 drives did the job. Maybe, formatting them in the PC would have solved the problem.

this is definitely something to consider.

Drives are cheap so I may try it out.
