It has absolutely gotten worse with the 5000. I have one and got very similar results in my own testing. a 64 sample variance is significant when you are talking about trying to layer sounds and sync with DAW's and such. Because of that, I'm now a proud owner of a MPC4000 (again). As much as I loved the newer features of the 5000, at the end of day I'll trade all of that in for something that just works as it was intended to. I thought about holding on to the 5000 to see what if any updates akai may release, but I really don't think that will happen in the near future. I also think the issue could be much larger than just at the OS level and could potentially be in the processor itself. Anyways, my 4000 should be arriving in a few days so I've got to figure out how to get all my sounds/programs/sequences from the 5000 into the 4000. I remember how much fun akai.sys was....

I am not convinced about the so-called 64 sample variance several forum members have been talking about...especially the faulty tests they have been using to come up with their conclusions.

Perform the exact same tests on any MPC and on a DAW itself and you will find similar results.

At least that is what I found. But I admit I could be doing something wrong. I will be more than happy to email anyone the audio files from my test to get a secong opinion.

I will keep my 4k as it is a great sampler/sequencer with a lot of daw features already build in. However as I have made a major investment in third party software instruments, effects, and plugins the Ren will be a great workflow to my studio environment.

Currently I resample some of my sound sources directly into my 4k depending on my needs and wants at the time. My main and only concern is the ability to create music tracks. Any new tools that make that possible is used in the studio. Since I never took my 4k out on the road (it is too bulky and heavy in the case for that total standalone isn't top priority for me as I always work in conjunction with either Logic Pro and every blue moon Ableton now.

I made a lot of tracks with maschine too which further opened my way of thinking of the possiblities of Ren when it was first announced in Jan. Way different than Battery, Ultrabeat or Drum tracks with a regular midi controller.

Anyways whenever Ren drops I with continue working with both Ren and 4k.

By the way does Ren supersede the 4k no is my answer. However it will give me another way to integrate my virtual plugins within my workflow. It doesn't have to be one or the other. It can be both depending on which I want to work with on a particular day.


I see it like walking into a fully expanded studio were you can choose the tool for your particular session instead of always limited to one.

You have the option to turn the lights off on the Ren.
