A Little 4k History

There was some discussion in the past on how earlier versions of the 4k were configured. I mentioned they use to come as Studio A & D. And I think there was a B & C as well.

I found this link to be somewhat helpful in clarifying this...MPC4000 Studio "A" (8 out board installed)

Not to mention I'm working with a Studio "D" (adat & spdif/wordclock boards installed), so please feel free to comment if you like.

Oh, and beware of the LE version...for those that don't know.

Nope, there never was a Studio B or C.

Studio A meant Analog
Studio D meant Digital

As for the LE. that was an attempt to boost sales by AKAI. It failed. Very few LE's actually sold . Musicians Friend "bought" 30 units and returned them back to AKAI because no one wanted the LE's. GC, also bought about 30 and sold only a handful of them before returning them also.

These permutations were a US thing, I think.

In the UK in 2002, my MPC4000 came with nothing else in it except the FX card and a (30GB?) hard drive, with the "Akai Pro Vol.0" and S6000/S5000 libraries pre-installed on it.
That's the way they all were.

No extra RAM, no ADAT, no 8 outs, no SPDIF/wordclock, no CD drive.

damn, and what did that set you back?

About £2250 I think!
(although being a bit skint at the time I got it on an interest free credit thing with montly installments!)

But of course I ended up buying the ADAT board, the 512MB RAM, a CDR/W drive, the SPDIF board, the 8 outs board, a USB keyboard, a flightcase, ...
which probably came to about another £1000 all told!

This is one of the reasons why I was a bit non-plussed when the OS was so full of holes

I can imagine, i would be kind of pissed off too.

You know, I somehow thought 4000s all came with spdif and 8 outs etc stock, etc... I didn't realise they made different versions that were lacking.
