The 4k is the center of my music making process and I record all audio signals from
the 4k and the other (midi driven) synths into the Yamaha AW2400. Personally, I
don't want to use a computer besides backing up data.
Often I think about how to make the whole process more straight forward by means
of gear reduction. Being drawn between different (gear) possibilities might be a kind
of luxury problem (e.g. - should I use the Akai or the Emu sampler?) but fact is,
it compromises the process of music making.
I started with the 4k one year ago and finally come to the conclusion, that it is one
piece of gear that I use very frequently and it is worth to be kept. Besides, I also own
the EMU ULTRA with the RFX-32 effect board which offers very nice and fruitful
resampling possibilities.
But for reasons of minimizing the equipment, I'm now searching for an ideal external
FX to complement the 4k. I'm not looking for that top notch reverb, but for FX
that actually are effective, i.e. they get part of the sound.
Some possibilities might be:
- BOSS VF-1
- BOSS SX-700
- TC Fireworx
- KORG KAOSS PAD
Personally, I like BOSS equipment for their attractive prices and dependable quality.
I once played around with the Korg but didn't like the fx at all. Fireworx might be
too expensive.
