Heck, half the screws were missing. Anyway, I noticed that the contrast control for the screen was really flaky. In some instances I had to apply pressure to the contrast knob to light up the lcd. I figured the problem was the contrast pot.
I took apart the lcd screen and unsoldered the contrast pot. It took me a little while to figure out the exact specs for this part. Luckily I found the service manual online. And after reading the technical specs on the Alps website I was able to figure out a suitable replacement. I ordered the part from mouser and soldered it in. Viola, works again. I've read about a couple other people online having the same problem with the contrast control.
FWIW, here's the mouser part number for the replacement Alps 10k pot: 688-RK09D1130C2P
