Probably not possible, but i thought id ask anyway

i have another drum machine hooked up to the MPC.

MPC4k is the Master, so when in Song mode, when I press play, the external drum machine starts playing.

What I would like to do is actually have the Drum machine start AFTER the first sequence has played.

is there some midi message you can send to start and stop an external sequencer machine?

Insert whatever makes up those measures within that sequence as blank measures at the begining of the song (on the external drum machine of course).

In other words, just rewrite the sequence with blank whatever at the begining.

Since the MPC4000 understands Sysex, you also could try just to record the MMC START command
from your external gear. But this wouldn't be very comfortable.

You could also offset the timecode, like you do when syncing to things like DA88's so that the external sequencer doesn't play until it gets to the particular song you are syncing to.
The sequencer will go into play mode but not actually start playing until it gets to the specified time.

Yeah, if you just want to offset it by milliseconds, just hit window on the timing correct field and you and offset it.

Just pointing out this is not the type of Offset I was referring to in my post.

It depends what your drum machine is and what MIDI messages it responds to!
The simplest "MIDI System Real Time" message relating to this is "START" (FA hex) - the MPC4000 is sending this when your press "PLAY START" and that's what's making your drum machine start.
You can go into the Config settings on the MPC and change what sync messages it transmits,
but as advised above, the simplest thing is just to put a blank pattern at the start of your slave drum machine's song!
