Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

Ok..so I'm a new proud owner of a MPC4000 having purchased recently to replace my 2500..I'm having trouble though with getting aftertouch from my novation remote sl to work..even when the midi should be thru'ing to the midi out ports.

So..I have the novation set up to send aftertouch correctly. It always send channel atouch appararntly (never ran into problems with 2500 from what I remember). I have checked the midi filter on the 4000 and nothing is selected for blocking. The midi input monitor shows only note on and note off velocities.
I can't get any recognition of aftertouch from the novation; either when I set the internal sampler to respond (tried both channel aftertouch and poly atouch in the program edit menu) or when being thru'd to the external midi ports.

What am I doing wrong or is there a bug? I'm on 0s1.71. let me know if you need more details!

Please help!!
Thanks

Check your Program Modulation settings.

Still not sure why people use AfterTouch, for me it always screws something up along the MIDI path sooner or later.

The 4k should be able to work with any basic midi message, are you trying to use it with the internal sound engine or an external midi module?

Programs can be set to use either polyphonic aftertouch or channel aftertouch. I believe there is a bug where that setting is never saved, so if you change it, it will go back to the default when you load it (requiring a manual change). I can't remember which one is default. The 4k's pads can be set to send out poly pressure from the Misc page.

Regardless of the sound engine using it, the sequencer should be able to recognize the message. Try going to step edit recording mode and see if the message populates there. If I don't see something there, I resort to MIDI OX to see exactly what the sending device is putting out. That program will always give the final answer on what is being transmitted for any MIDI message (in case the sending device is the problem).

thanks for getting back!
It actually transpired that somewhere between having my 2500 and the 4000 my novation broke and aftertouch no longer worked. Had checked using midi-ox too and it showed same as MPC4000 settings..nice to know I'm not going mad but which I'd thought of the fact my keyboard might be broken before blaming MPC ;-)

Time to open my novation up! :?

ps - mcsmooth - i dig what you and foeg were getting into with the MPC and sysex..some of your posts have been invaluable to learn about sysex!
