Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

last night i had a session with a friend of mine! he's djing on a traktor! we tried to sync his tractor (as master) to my 4k as slave!

never synced my 4k as slave before!

setup: the traktor is master connected via usb to korg microcontrol (usb keyboard for its pc/traktor) and from those miciouts into the 4k! clock source: midi clock (he says its the only one available)! so i set on my sync page midi in II: midi clock, frame rate 25 (he says he has no control on framerate) and seq start time 00 all the way, mmc disabled! thats it!

what happens:
i get somethin! my tempo is changed to ext - meaning i loose somehow my control over my 4k (no bpm displayed) and the remaining synced gear on my usual midi out syncs which i never ever had a problem with since ages aswellll! but we are not synced! no idea on how many bpms the 4k is playin at all - but they ain't synced! he ain't able to start playin the 4k - i can - but no sync!

now - i have never used traktor - no idea what to set where there! does anyone of guys know how to sync the traktor with the 4k or viceversa?
(maybe also some experience from some of you syncing qbase/pt in here could help a lot ...)

any help is as always much appreciated

You could try a host application like Cubase, Logic, Sonar (every app that supports VST). Then sync that host to the MPC and insert Traktor on a track.

tip: Devinemachine is also very cool! :D

thanx ikke!

i much appreciate! ... so basically you say we should sync via qbase (i know he has that one on his laptop already)!

who is master (its a shame but i think qbase has to be)? i wanna synch my external shit as usual from my 4k so i dunno whats best! and what clock source is best for synching? MTC or SMPTE? btw: is it possible to sync qbase to 4k via mtc or smpte and at the same time 4k to my gear via midi clock (my synth only gets midi clock)?

i m sure synching his laptop and 4k together will lead into further problems! so any kind of tip/knowledge thisregarding from experienced qbase/pt/4k synchers is very welcome!

devinemachine is a similar djtool as traktor?

thanx

If you have PT you can sync it with beat clock. Cubase/Nuendo wont support beat clock if I remeber correctly.

I dont know if the MPC will receive MTC and send beat clock at the same time.. You should try things out! Good luck. :)

Devinemachine is a VSTi wich you can use to mix loops and samples (wav) it has some nice effects and it has a joggle wheel, very nice! :D

The frame rate applies to MTC not MIDI clock. Midi Clock just syncs the beat where MTC will actually sync the location of the song. If I sync to Sonar using MTC I can select any point on the Sonar track, hit play and the MPC will start playing at the same spot. You would have to set up both units to the same frame rate....you should set it to 30 (non-dropped) if using MTC.

My room is filled with vinyl! :D I never use Traktor, dont see the point in mixing with a mouse.. but with Devinemachine you can do some crazy stuff! Its more of a sampler. The coolest feature is the jogwheel (virtual offcourse) wich slows down and speeds up de loop/sampler very fast and it gives some stuttering effect. Really nice! You should check out the demo and try it to see it yourself.
