power issues with HDD

Hi all, I am having a real problem installing a HDD in my mpc 4k. I have attempted to install a seagate barracuda 7200.7 160gb using the power board as shown in the service part of the manual.

I should mention that I bought a specific power lead for the purpose but it turned out my mpc needed an older version with a larger pin socket.

When I had made connections and powered on I got a 'MeeeeeeP!' sound and then all went dark, well the mpc went off and stayed off. Luckily it came back on after a few minutes but I am not sure whats happening.

Anyone come across this?

This sucks as I have been getting into using the mpc 4k regularly...

Can the 4k use an Ultra ATA 100 drive?

You shouldn't have needed any thing like that for the inside of the 4k.

However the statement

Pretty much says you shorted the power supply either because you had something backward or because of your strange cabling.
The question now would be if it just shorted or damaged the power supply as well as why you couldn't just plug a hard drive directly in if it was compatible?

I got this in reply to an email to VST:

If your MPC is shutting off and wont power up for a few minutes - this means
you have a direct short on the switch mode power supply (self protect
circuit is active) most likely in your hard drive and/or cabling. If this is
the case you run a very high risk of damaging the unit if you keep powering
up the unit.
I would recommend sending to a service center or ship to us for diagnosis or
repair.

I will post some pictures of the power board and the cabling I have for the HDD, perhaps someone will know something.

Maybe the HDD is not of the correct type, does anyone know?

Of course!!! How could I miss this? You may have got one of the cables, either data or power caught under the mounting bracket screws that hold the HDD in place. Even a small bare wire touching bare metal will cause a short.

Check the cables carefully.

I am still having troubles with the HDD in my mpc. I have got the correct cables for powering the HDD and CD drives but the HDD still shuts the mpc off whereas the CD drive powers on. Can someone give me an exact model number for a decent HDD of around 120-160 gb.

OK, I have got the correct cables through from VST and have managed to install a maxtor 40gb HDD I bought at a boot fair for £3! It is pretty noisy but you can use the 'spin off' function when the HDD isn't in use.

The problem was the cables I was using. As a result, I DO NOT recommend buying the cables for the powering board from ebay!

I'll upgrade the HDD to the seagate I was originally trying to install soon. Unfortunately the HDD's I used with the wrong cable are dead.
