Just wanted to post about this MPC I just got, the notorious MPC 4000! First off let me start off by saying that the 1000 is a fine machine, at least with the good pads, that's for sure. My only gripes with it was it's size, pad size, lcd screen size, non-tilt lcd screen, and only 2 midi outs. This is alll taken out and in its place is portability. I do not need a portable mpc whatsoever, so for me it was either the 2.5 k or the 4k. I wanted the 5k at first, then I read all the reviews and whatnot, and well, we all know it goes downhill from there. I figured getting a 2.5 k was a waste since my maxed out 1k was basically that minus a few features. The 24 bit full feature sampling, 4 Midi outs, Phono in, 6 QLinks, size(The bigger the better), USB slave and host, SCSI, Bigger LCD screen, Multis, Keygroups, Sampling from CD Player, and Aksys software is what sets it COMPLETELY apart from the 2.5k, at least for me(Correct me if I am wrong if the 2.5k can do any of those things).
Anyways I have had the 4k now since Yesterday afternoon. First off let me just start by saying this thing is a friggin beast! It is so damn huge, A LOT bigger than I was expecting, you really need to see it in person to appreciate its greatness. At first I was initimidated because a lot of people I read were saying it's the hardest learning curve for an mpc. Anyways, at first, after loading up and taking a look around for the first time, I was second guessing myself thinking maybe I should have gotten the 2.5k instead. I was thinking maybe I am taking a step back instead of forward with a new mpc with a new os, etc. One big thing that freaked me out is there is no grid edit on the main page like on jjos2 where you can literally see what your typing in. I know you can go to step edit but it's not the same. It was pretty much smooth sailing except for a few bumps where I had to read the manual, and a couple times use the search engine to bring up some old threads.
Well today, after getting past a huge hump (I didn't know the xlr jacks were 2 in 1, so I was using the phono jacks and my recordings were loud as hell. Anyways, after I fixed that I was moving around in the OS crazy fast, everything at ease. Anyways, I have come to the conclusion that I EASILY made the right decision. This machine is fantastic. Oh yeah, the pads on this thing are AMAZING. Comming from Maschine and the 1k (with the 50% thicker pads with built in corks), which both are hard as friggin rocks, this thing kills them. That's one thing about Maschine that bugs me, that rock hard feeling and the platsically(I know not a word) feels so cheap I hate how it feels. The 4k has shined light onto Maschine! Controlling Maschine with the 4k is awesome, and same with my Yamaha Rm1x, it has revived it 200 percent! I also use my MS2000 with the 4k and it works like a charm, piece of cake to setup.
I will finish this by saying this piece of equipment is the bees knees! If you're contemplating getting one, do it, you will not regret it, trust me. Not having the grid edit on the main page I thought was horrible at first, but turns out I don't give a flying fluck. It's not like I am working around it, I just don't need it, period. This machine really is that good, and I haven't even gotten that far into it. I have just briefly touched on the effects, and you can down sample to as low as 8 bits, that is crazy awesome! It just sounds way too good to be true, I still can't believe I own such a fine piece of equipment. If these machines keep on running like the are supposed to, they will become a classic, heck in my book they already are. Please, do yourself a favor and give this machine a shot.
