Good trick with DAW! Keeping your project in the 4K longer!

Hi, this one may seem very obvious to some but for those others it's pretty cool. yesterday I was building some beats with a couple of mates. Built the drums, put in some midi keys and then started to record some gat and bass. I was trying to get protools and the 4K to sync up but wasn't working for me ( must have been the grade...). Anyhow to get around this i recorded the beat as it was at that time into protools at the same time my bro was playing some bass into protools ( obviously these were in sync). Then he layered in some gat in time with the beat and bass that was playing out from protools.

This is the good bit....after that I simply lined up the beat with the beginning of the bar (same tempo as the 4K) then went through and found the sections that I wanted to use as samples. Found my 4 bar loops from the bass and gat he had played. Cut them into 4 bar loops and then exported them as waves onto a usb stick. Then loaded the waves back into the 4 k to use as loops along with the beat. If I start the imported sample playing at 001:01:000 it will be perfectly synced with the beat. This allows me to keep on working in the 4K building the beat. (which I prefer to moving the whole project over into the DAW before time). Also it's easy to have different 4 bar loops for the different sections of the song.

I realise that I can sample bass and gat into the 4K directly. But I find it much easier to move the material around and cut it up in protools than in the 4K.

I also created a new program for each of the samples i bought in allowing me to control the volume of the different samples in the program mixer window. So you can kind of do fades in and out of the different samples (rather than using track mute).

The 4k is an awesome sound module/sampler that can be controlled externally from your daw for other than sync purposes (if that's what you're referring to).

I've been trying to hip katz to this long ago, but nobody wanted to listen.

yeah, I'm thinking about using the 4 k to control more midi functions/instrument tracks within protools (as a trigger) and also getting pro tools to be triggering samples out of the 4k - once I've recording the midi notes into pro tools off the 4 k played in real time (been moving away from quantizing recently). Hope this makes sense. Thinkin of ways to save time in production. Have yet to do a beat like this though. I kind of like listening to the 4k rather than watching the protools screen. But getting comfortable enough with PT now that this may not be so important anymore. If you want to elaborate Dab I'm all ears.
