As Lampdog said the purpose of your 8-outs is to get audio to your recorded format easier/quicker. Think of the 8-outs like this

The only thing that 8-out are for is audio.
If all your tracks have only 8 sounds then just push start button to record all 8 sounds sounds into daw however most people have more than 8 sounds in their tracks which means that the 8-outs will have to be tracked out numerous times.
For example, if my song has 24 sounds then that means that I would need something to sync my MPC to Pro Tools so that all 24 sounds play at the correct time in which I programed them in the song on the MPC.
My 24 sounds would mean that I would be tracking 3 passes ("passes" is a studio term). 1 Pass = 1st 8 sounds , 2nd Pass = next (different) 8 sounds , 3rd Pass = last (different) 8 sounds. 3 Passes x 8 sounds = 24 Sounds. That is all provided you don't have a sound or two in stereo. If that is the case you will be doing more that 3 passes.That syncing will be done by Pro Tools triggering the MPC when to start and finish and also when to trigger the sounds in your track to play at a certain time.
The only way that DAWs can trigger is MIDI, MIDI CLOCK & MIDI TIME CODE (MTC) which all are used in music nothing more that to lock multiple pieces of equipment into the same time as eachother . The MPC4000 also has the function of SMPTE (syncing option used by the Motion Picture Association) as well but since you sound like your new to synching stick with MIDI until you get advanced enough to use SMPTE, which I might add I personally find to be alot tighter in locking in the timing of tracking out.
***Side note you can also track out of the main out of the MPC4000 but as you can calculate, with 24 sounds that would be a very lengthy tracking session and in addition you would have to keep assigning each sound to L (left) and R (right) of the main outs so that they can play solo. Some such as myself track out this way because there seems to be a difference in the sound quality that comes out of the main outs.***
