yo - ddot_SFV - thanx for the good news! 
damn - so far I didn’t experience any problems with my hd but I don’t wanna wait for em and so it think its really time to take action here. and i think it would be helpful for me and prob for ya all to find a way how to backup in a decent way! what about transforming this thread into a state of the art 4k hd backup thread! … well just an idea!
anyhow - imo backing up through cdrw is great for finished tunes and some important stuff but for backing up 20,30 and more gigabytes of data 1.a pain 2. to expensive and 3. in the long run multiple painful and expensive!
so - given the fact that my 4k won’t leave my little studio unless fallin apart (… and not even then) right now i m thinkin of gettin a huge external usb hd! the idea here is to have an external usb main hd, which gets backed up regularly on other hds such as the one on a pc! … maybe even the internal one gets downgraded to a backup hd! good idea/bad idea, feedback welcome!
and regarding usb hds I have some basic questions which i hope someone with an external usb hd in here is willing to answer!
1. how fast are usb hd on the 4k? (saving, uploading) slower? how slow? painful as cdrws?
2. the data on my 4k hd is saved in quit an anarchical order! it always used to be like this since my 4k came with 3-4 gigabytes of preloaded sounds saved somehow somewhere! question: once i have all my data on a usb hd would it be possible to stick the hd to a pc and use drag and drop to bring some order into it from there?
3. is it possible to defragment external usb hd?
4. copying the entire usb hd to a pc hd for backups should be workin great, right?
if those things are possible i m goin to buy an external usb hd asap …
if anyone using such a disc could solve some of the above doubts or is up to discuss em would be greatly appreciated!
... and better suggestions are always welcomell!

ALtapiano,,,, i think it would be wise to make a topic on that USB issue, ive spoken more poeple including myself who want to know more about that

I don't know how fast an external USB drive would be, but it took me hours to transfer 1 gig from my mac to the MP using Aksys. For thoses who aint scared to open up the machine, I would remove the HD and install it in your pc or mac. Transfer the files to you computer. By a new drive. Remove the old drive from the computer and install the new. Transfer the files to the new drive then install it into the MP. Retire the original MP drive. Seems like a lot a trouble, but I'm sure its quicker than USB.
