Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

Need this reconfirmed to clear up some confusion, hope the 4000 veterans can help me:

Can I audition samples thru load menu while a beat is playing? I think thats something 5000 can do but 4000 not.

Can I audition through channels 1/2 and not L/R which is the default

Now this one is tricky: Wanna see if I am the only one with this problem. Pls do check your MP and let me know:

Assume you change pad sens to 200% restart the MP, the setting will save. When I hit pads after the reboot the setting shows 200% but sensitivity feels like 100%. If I change the value to lets say 199 and back to 200% I am back to how it should be. Anyone else got similar issue?

1 has been answered

2 - not tried it but if you are changing sounds already set up in a program which are set to a separate out it might be possible. But my hunch would be no.

3 Seems to be a common problem. The pads imho on the 4k are terrible. But its not just the pads its the way they react to velocity through the electronic triggers. IF I trigger my 4k from a keyboard the velocity response is superb. Ideal for hi hats to inject a feel. I have see about triggering the 4k from my MPC 2kxl. but what I do know is the response in the 2ks pads (especially hi h hats) is far superior than the 4ks. Its a real shame. The 4k is the best machine of them all by a long way, but the pads response lets it down and lets face it, they are central to how you interact with the machine.

Labcoats,

Thanks especially for 3rd Point.

I agree with you on the Pads as I came from the 2000 originally, I prefer when the pads are on 200% that way I don't have to hammer the machine so much.

So just to clarify, when on your MP4k pads are set to 200% you should be able to get 127 velocity by not having to hit the pads very hard.

Then reboot and the sensitvity shows 200% but feels more like 100%. That sounds like a software bug to me ? Is this exactly what your MP4k does too ?

Peace

Yes Ive heard about this 200% bug to. But the truth is no matter where I set the % the pads velocity response is pretty bad. Sometimes you want to do intricate levels and I just cant get this done in the 4k. Its incredibly frustrating. and its something you just dont think about when your buying one

Its a real shame but it looks like Im going to have to use other oads, maybe a 2000xl to trigger the 4k or some pad controller option. but Im wary of those as well. That means more space needed (I have a 2000xl) just havent tried it yet.

I will bet if this were the 60 or the 3000 or even the 2000/xl some genius would have come up with a solution for it. Any stuff like this seems to get ignored for the 4k which is in my opinion the best MPC of them all...except for the pads.

The only mods we seeme t be able to get are wooden sides. Yeah, thats really going to help me inject feel in to my beats

Labcoats,

you seem to be the only whos got either the guts to speak about this 200% bug or comprehends what im trying to say.

I salute you for this.

...and i do hear what you're saying bout the pads. Lets hope Ren is any good.

Peace

I know when I bought the MPC 4000 I had trouble with the pads. I had some extra pads from MPCStuff.com laying around..I switched pads, and all those pad issue went away.

If you want to create variation in your velocity levels - try using Qlink to control the velocity of the pad - that way you can control the velocity of your hits in real time using the qlink....works. Peace

On the 200% pad sens: Its a bug, I have two 4k's side by side and both behave the very same way:

Assume you change pad sens to 200% restart the MP, the setting will save. When I hit pads after the reboot the setting shows 200% but sensitivity feels like 100%. If I change the value to lets say 199 and back to 200% I am back to how it should be. Anyone else got similar issue?
