ak.sys 2.53

So I plan to try out Ak.sys today. I have never used it before. My sound library has grown substantially and I thought that having it all on various usb thumb drives was the best method of transferring and storing.
So last night I tried to transfer everything to the MPC and I realized that you can't simply take everything in its nicely organized state on a thumb drive straight into the mpc 4000 and have it be the same. So I gather this is why ak.sys was invented. Well I have done a search in our great forum and I have gleaned these things about ak.sys (please correct me if I am wrong)

1) the latest version is 2.53 for the mpc 4000 and z series
2) Use Windows XP (I have a sp3 laptop) for it to work
3) No instructions
4) connect the mpc's rear usb port only.

If anyone has details before I download the program please share. I have an 80 gig HDD and I want to add 10 gigs worth of organized sounds.

PS I looked on youtube for video examples of AKsys and see only one but it is with an Akai DPS24. Am I missing something?
PPS I read a post that said it is just as easy to simply take the hdd and connect it to my desktop and organize the files and then put it back in the MPC.

install aksys on win xp, plug up the USB, double click the aksys icon on your desktop, 4k hdd, memory, programs and samples can be accessed. Also, program and multi tweaked inside of aksys, it does ALOT more than merely transfer. If you have samples with metadata it will crash during transfer. If samples are even slightly corrupted it will crash. I reopen samples in sound forge and resale as wav and remove metadata and it works again in aksys. Just do it already, you can only know so much before you try something.

Yep. It's def a powerful tool to have if you know how to use it in certain scenarios.

This is the first time I have ever heard of "metadata" in the context of .WAV files.
For the sake of thoroughness please explain, I am sure there are others who in the future will benefit from thread as I am learning now.

In the case of dealing with soundforge files, it's additional info inbedded in the .wav/mp3 file pertaining to the author/artist, copyright info, and etc.

Sound Forge gives you the option when saving to not include metadata. I always uncheck the box.

somehow I just knew it was not going to be as simple as Lampdog stated earlier.

Okay so i went to the akai site and brought aksys and the usd driver on to my windows xp sp3 laptop. I go tot eh start button and look for aksys and double click it. Two things come up: a smaller item on the screen that says editor and a much larger one that just says aksys. I plug the usb cable into my laptop and turn on the akai mpc4000. Nothing special happens. The computer said it was looking for a way to access the mpc and asked if I want it to search the web for a way to open it. I chose that and then it came back saying nothing found.
I just have two blank white boxes on the screen.
my mpc it on the latest OS.

anyone anyone?

I had a few issues getting it to work myself, but unfortunately I can't point you in the exact direction because my brother popped round and tinkered with a few settings and then it jumped into life!

There was definitely something amiss with the drivers though...

I still have to refresh the browser within the software a few times to get it to connect to the 4k, but once working it seems like a pretty useful tool.

Stick with it because it's a worthwhile addition to the overall package IMO. It's a lot more convenient than organising files within the machine, or extracting the hard drive to do it from your computer.

yes extracting the hd looks kinda tough because it is a narrow space one has to unscrew in on one side of the machine.
I am tired now...I have been working on trying to get the computer to notice the 4000 or the z4 for over an hour. What a waste of time.

Drivers.

Right click my computer
Manage
Device manager
There might be a yellow exclamation mark that needs a 4k driver installed.
That driver file for the 4k, put in on your desktop. Go back to device manager to the yellow exclamation mark and install (or point the computer to that file to install it) that driver file (right click ont the exclamation mark). Reboot.

Weren't there other files in that zip download. One of those will be the driver your looking for. I'm on iPad right now, really hard to get you an example at the moment

I noticed that others have commented that they are willing to pay for someone to write an open source program similar to Aksys. The truth is that may be easier than one thinks. I will start to ask my colleagues about the possibiility.
Any one know how to get in touch with the guy who wrote the JJOS? I need to ask him some questions.
For about US$1-2000 you can get some programmers in India to code for you if it isn't too complex. They would definitely need the Akai code though.
I gather we want a program that allows us to layer sounds in the zone field, store our files in the harddrive, recognizee the device, make sure that midi messages correspond to the on screen tweaks.
Anything else?

Ak.sys already does this mate... you've just got to get it working!

After installing aksys and when you go into device manager, you may see the yellow exclamtion mark. right click on it and install driver, point to one of the files I mentioned above to "Update Driver".
