4000 PGM format compatibility with newer MPCS (spec. 1000)

I know from reading and experience that program files created on newer MPCs (1000, 2500 etc) aren't compatible with the 4000. I'm not sure whether this incompatibility extends to sequences, songs etc, but I have a feeling they'd work bar a little adjusting due to the differences in machines.

It's a long shot especially as I've done extensive searching before but does anyone know of a way to simply convert 1000 PGM files into the PGM file format the 4000 accepts? Or whether this will ever even be possible?

The 4000 and 1000 compliment each other really well. The 4000 is comfortable to work with and ideal for extended use. If the sessions could then be transfered to the portable 1000 for live performance or working on the fly they'd be a fantastic team. The 1000 and 2500 are too similar to justify having one for live performance and the larger 2500 for main production.

Anyway, bit of an unfocused thread but just been thinking a lot about producing on the 4000 and performing using the 1000 but the song still being flexible. If anyone has any insight/advice I'm all ears.

Perhaps something like CDxtract or aWave may be able to to convert an MPC1000 PGM to a 4000 AKP, but there's no way if doing this via the MPC1000 nor can it be done via any of the recognised MPC software apps (as far as I'm aware) - e.g. bluebox doesn't export in legacy pgm or akp format, while MPC editor cannot read mpc1000 pgms.

Maybe when they sort out the Ren software it can be used as a pseudo MPC format convertor, if only...

I was hoping for that, especially as it's a massive part of my day to day work. Would be nice to see the Ren export in legacy formats as well, not just 5000/1000. Guess they need to nail legacy import first...

Not all file types are compatible between the MPC2000 classic and the MPC2000XL even (as I found out back in 1999) so it's not so surprising that there is a mismatch between the 4000 and the 1000.

I guess some of the functions are just too different.

Not as far as I'm aware.

Maybe you'll just have to work with midi files and recreate your MPC4000 program's on the MPC1000. If you had a bunch of wav files on a PC and the correct software (aksys/ bluebox) for creating programs, could be a workaround that's not too time consuming??

No, still the same 2500/5000 export only. I would imagine JJ might be able to work on an MPC2000XL or the more universal MPC3000 format export , so you'd have a PGM file that would load into a 4000 to give you the basic program params.
