are you guys all hardware all the time? ian, i know you use hard disk recorders, but in Cubase you can control 32 tracks of midi simultaneously and 16 tracks in Logic. nice way to avoid conversion trips.

haha ! Thats why I have a 3000 LE sitting right next to the 4000 :)

Yes,

I could almost do a complete tune with the 4k and analog mixer (mixed down in real time etc) but never enough outs.

I got the Ren a few weeks ago. Last night I fired up the 4k again. It was nice to be back and really showed how much functionality is missing from the ren.
The 4k isnt going anywhere though. Some tunes I know I will want the 4k and others I can do in the box with the Ren - or at least I want to be able to do with the Ren in stand alone mode..

Major stumbling block for me (Ren) is the incredibly stupid idea that the Daw(ish) Ren mixer should operate like the midi mixer on an MPC60 - Sequences tied to the mixer. So if you have multiple sequences and change the mix in any way, on any track - and that includes any plugins you adjust you have to go through every sequence/track and repeat the process. Its impossible to change the mix when you use multiple sequences. its like attaching the entire Pro tools mixing environment to regions - seriously.
That idea was fine 25+ years ago and was probably very cool in its day for a simple midi mixer. But its absolutely not the way to go today. It couldn't be more convoluted.

Ok, a bit off topic - but the reason I bought the Ren is because I like doing stuff with one piece of gear from start to finish. I had no idea the mixing environment of the Ren was a disaster. ill be off now 8)

"The 4k isnt going anywhere though."

that's because it's already there!

seriously: i also prefer one piece of gear to do all the work on. since the mpc4k isn't getting upgraded any time soon and i really don't want to buy more sh!t i devised a workaround using ableton that allows me to retain the sonic characteristics of mpc4k samples and i can still control everything from the 4k. unfortunately it's one more step but in the end it's what works.

Yeah I agree 'Its there'
:smoker:
But I would still need more outs to do complete tunes without resorting to the Daw. The 4k has the muscle to do it no problem.

its not a huge huge deal as I use an Innerclock Sync gen - Daw - 4k so Im bang on sync always. And if I do a fairly basic track I can do it all with just the 4k.

I think the 4000 is such a complete machine. It was not advertised well at all. I remember when it came out and I was in the music shop and the guys in there couldn't explain it to me. Which is the main reason I never got into it. The sellers noticed my confusion and they immediately started to push the items with sounds(keyboards).
Why wasn't it pushed as a synth as well when advertised? It has all the guts of a synth. I am just getting into using it and the Z4 together as a 20 output machine. THe box samplers of old just never got simple work flow right.
Every time I get into the mpc now I am just think to myself this thing is genius. I am such a fan. I genuinely hope that others can be exposed to it because of how useful it has been in my music making process.
I have too many synths to bother with recreating the same sounds in the mpc. However I am starting to think that I might just take all of my sounds and put them into the z and the mpc. Then I can maybe lessen the gear load.
lovin' my MPC

So on my 4000 I have the 8 analog outs card installed. Can you not install a second one in the other option slot? Or is 8 outs the max? Been searching but haven't found the answer. Sorry for the noob question..

There is only one port inside for the 8 output expansion. There is also only one port inside for the adat expansion.

So you cannot have two 8 output expansion boards in one MPC 4000. Same goes for the Adat board. The ports are sized differently.

If you have both the 8 output expansion and the adat expansion you do not have a 18 output machine that you can use all outputs at the same time. You have to decide which output type you are using.

The Z series can only hold one of either type of expansion board.

Cheers,
Ian

Thanks for the quick response. I was afraid of that.... Not a huge deal for me but would be nice to have 16 outs.

If you want 16 outs get an S6000 to use alongside your MPC4000 and Aksys. No point wishing an 8 out machine had 16. Do your homework before you buy gear, not afterwards.

S6000 is dope, still. And also has the ADAT option like the MPC4000.

this is wrong. you can use all 20 outputs at the same time however the digital outs will mirror the analog outs.

Yes indeed.

So with a suitable digital mixer you could treat all available analoue and digital outputs differently, which could be useful in some situations, especially live.
