os update

To update my os to the latest for the 4000 do I need to format the usb drive im going to save the updated os on? If so do I format it with the computer or my mp. Also can I do it this way or do I HAVE to plug my mpc to the computer itself? Thanks

A format on the computer should work fine, choose FAT32, default allocation size. (On Windows anyway).

You could also format it in the MPC which will also make it FAT32.

You don't USB/AkSys to do the OS update, the USB stick should work fine.

Thanks . Do you know if you can sample directly from the internal cd rom on the 4? I have seen people on youtube do it. The input setting reads internal (cd drive) or something, mine only has the option to sample from analog input, digital, or main out and I was hoping this was somethin had to do with my os. If anybody knows how to get to this function please reply.. Thanks

On the Record screen set it to Internal (Digital). When you have a CD in the tray you can play the CD from that screen and sample it from there.

on mine when I go to record screen it does not have that option. Even when I have a cd in the drive, I only get main out digi in and analog no internal. I been trying this for years lol just figured it was an os thing and I stuck to vinyl. Either way I would love to sample from an audio cd without having to go in from my external cd player thanks again.

I had the first two CD's I put in not get read. Track # just said zero. The third one listed only one track. (A major label disc circa early 90's). But I was able to hit play on the transport and sample it.

The Internal (Digital) setting should be right after Internal (Analog) as you turn the jog dial.

I don't know maybe take off the side panels and pop the top lid and see if the power cable and ribbon cable to the CD are properly seated. (I use a soup ladle to hold it open , a drum stick works good too)

It's not too bad a job the way the top lid flips up. If you end up with a stripped or rusted hex bolt on top though it can a real pain to open that part. But unless you're changing the pads or need to deep clean buttons you don't need to deal with that part to get at the innards. The machine is so huge that it's less of a pain to fidlle with the interior as everything is not as crammed as most MPC's.

I've got an issue with my eject button not working. I may be swapping in a new CD drive to see if it does the same.

Now that I think about it this wont b the first time cuz looking at my 4ooo (blue) it has grey pads and it came with black but I switched those with the xl I used to own . I swear one reason I got this was to sample strsight from cd lol.bs.. Gonna try fixit manana

@Humboy...Your internal cd drive in the MPC4000 needs to have a digital cable (it is small and thin) going from the CD drive to the digital in out board in order to be able to sample from a cd digitally.

Thus, you are not seeing the digital option. You can only record from the CD drive in an analog manner.

There was a post about this a while back. I had the same issue because I took the digital in/out from a Z4 and put it in my MPC4000. The Z4 did not have the small digital cable. So I ended up getting the cable through another means. I thought any small digital cable would do but that is not the case. I bought one on ebay and it would not fit. I subsequently bought another digital i/o that had the cable.

Sampling from the cd digitally will sound better than if you do so analog.

Sounds like the jumpers have been set wrong. Or the OS you're running doesn't have the feature. What OS are you on?

There is a jumper on the analog board that needs to be set to tell the MPC that there is analog audio coming from the CD Rom.

There is also a jumper on the digital board that needs to be set to tell that board that there's a digital output from the CD Rom connected to it.

Setting either of these jumpers correctly will activate the software in the OS to control the CD Rom drive. Obviously you will want at least the digital option available to you, but if the audio analog cable is there you might as well connect it as well.

If you have a look at Ian's vid at 3:00 - 3:10 you can see a thin grey wire that goes from the back right corner of the CD Rom drive up to the circuit board directly behind the drive. Very near to where that grey cable plugs into the board is a jumper for setting the CD Rom analog audio yes or no.

Can't remember where the jumper is on the digital board.

Is this cable in mp already? Im updating my os today so hopefully that will fix it also fix the issue with my left pads not working. If not im going in to get this cd feature. I really need that function... Thanks guys keep you posted

Ok so I updated my os and no luck, still no (internal) analog or (internal) digital option for sampling. Im under the hood now amd watched the vid and read the other thread (thanks guys).

Now the grey cable from the digital board is connected to my cd rom(i do not have the adat exp).
Still no luck even after seeing it was in tightly. So maybe my cable is no good, if so where do I find a new one radio shack? Or maybe I need to set the hd to slave or something one of you guys said. Idk but thanks for the help ill keep tryin.
