Hi All,
it seems to be a sensible idea to have a thread that is akin to a Wikipedia styled Dictionary for the MPC 4000.

This will aid in understanding the Program Modulation (Modulation Matrix) as many of the sources or destinations don't have definitions. Plus the Akai MPC4000 manual does not have a definitions page... it doesn't even have an Index.

Please fill in the blanks at your leisure in your posts. You can be in-depth in your post I will only add a line or two to this list.... no need to write books on each word or phrase. Concise and informative being the key.

DICTIONARY

Adat: a cable/connection type. Used for the simultaneous digital recording of eight digital audio tracks at once.

Aftertouch: Also known as Pressure Sensitivity. Response to the force with which a key is held down after the initial impact

Amp Envelope: The Digitally Controlled Amplifier (DCA) section on an MPC4000/Z4/Z8 sampler. The DCA uses an Envelope to control the overall loudness (or amplitude) of the sound/sample over time. Envelopes are activated by pressing the keys on an attached MIDI keyboard or pads on the MPC4000.

Amplitude: Simply refers to the volume (level) of a sound or sample; how loud it is.

Attack: Immediately upon pressing a key (or pad), the envelope "opens" from zero to full. This is controlled by Attack time. An Attack time of zero means the envelope goes from zero to full instantly (ie sharp attack). Increasing the Attack time means that this will happen more slowly.

Attenuation: The opposite of amplification. On the MPC4000/Z4/Z8 attenuation is the process of lowering the amplitude (volume) level of a sound, often in conjunction with the amplitude envelope.

Control (CTRL):

Control Change (CC): is a MIDI message capable of transmitting a range of values, usually 0-127. The MIDI Spec makes 128 different continuous controllers available for each MIDI channel, although some of these have been pre-assigned to other functions. CC’s are commonly used for things like MIDI controlling volume (#7), pan (#10), data slider position (#6), mod wheel (#1) and other variable parameters.

Cutoff: This control sets the initial cutoff frequency of the selected filter type. The nature of the sound depends very much on the type of filter being used.

Decay: While the key (or pad) is still pressed, the envelope then drops from full to the Sustain level. This is controlled by Decay time. A Decay time of zero means the envelope goes from full to sustain instantly. Increasing the Decay time means that this will happen more slowly.

Filter: The filter plays a key part in any sound creation and it is responsible for some of the most dramatic real-time effects in these Akai units. A filter is a device that selectively removes, attenuates or boosts part of the sound and lets other parts pass through unaffected.

Filter Envelope:

Glissando: Similar to Portamento. It is a glide between notes but the glide is quantized into semitone steps.

High Pass Filter: A high-pass filter (HPF) is a filter that passes high-frequency signals but attenuates or reduces the amplitude ofsignals with frequencies lower than the cutoff frequency. The actual amount of attenuation for each frequency varies from filter to filter. It is sometimes called a low-cut filter or bass-cut filter.

Keygroup: A KEYGROUP is a specifed note or range of notes into which a sample can be assigned to each of four zones.

KEYGROUP PROGRAM: consists of up to 128 defined keygroups. Think of a keygroup as one or more keys on a keyboard, think of a keygroup program as a set of keygroups, or the whole keyboard.

Legato: (Italian for "tied together") indicates that musical notes are played or sung smoothly and connected. That is, the player transitions from note to note with no intervening silence.

Level:

LFO: Low Frequency Oscillator. There are two in the MPC4000 and Z series. Each can be used for filter sweeps, vibrato, tremolo, phase and more. This is where sound creation begins. Waveforms are the building blocks here. You can sync the LFOs so all 64 voices run together at the same rate or swith the sync off so that each runs at a slightly different speed to create an ensemble effect on sounds such as brass, strings pads and such. You can also sync to incoming MIDI time.

Notch: A filter type. There are five in the MPC(Notch 1, Notch 2, Notch 3, Wide Notch and Bi-Notch) The cutoff controls the attenuation. Resonance increases the depth of the Notch. It sharply attenuates frequency-specific noise like main hum with minimal damage to remaining audio.

Portamento: This function allows notes played to slide from one to another, instead of moving in steps. Thus creating a different sound. Good for use with stringed unfretted instrument sounds, also synths and vocals. The speed of the glide is controlled by the Time parameter .

Q-Link: These are either knobs or sliders on the MPC4000, and on the Z series just knobs. You can control Parts or FX parameters. You can assign them all to different functions in one Part or all of the knobs and sliders each to there own Part. These knobs and sliders can transmit MIDI Control Change messages.

Aftertouch

Also known as Pressure Sensitivity.
Response to the force with which a key is held down after the initial impact


Channel aftertouch:
One level of pressure is reported across the entire keyboard, which affects either
all notes pressed (even if they are not the ones being pushed into aftertouch) or
a subset of the active notes in some instruments that allow this level of control.


Polyphonic aftertouch:
Each individual note has its own sensor for pressure that enables differing
usage of aftertouch for different notes.

AMPLIFIER ENVELOPE - The Digitally Controlled Amplifier (DCA) section on an MPC4000/Z4/Z8 sampler. ENVELOPE PARAMETERS - The most common envelope has 4 stages or parameters: (1) Attack time, (2) Decay time, (3) Sustain level, and (4) Release time. This is usually called ADSR Envelope. Apart from controlling the Amplifier, envelopes can also be used to control other sections of an MPC4000/Z4/Z8 via the Modulation Matrix.

Keygroup

A KEYGROUP is a specifed note or range of notes into which a sample can be assigned to each of four zones. A KEYGROUP PROGRAM consists of up to 128 defined keygroups. Think of a keygroup as one or more keys on a keyboard, think of a keygroup program as a set of keygroups, or the whole keyboard.

Traditional hardware (rack-mount) samplers use keygroup-based programs where typically a sample is assigned across a range of keys so you can play it at different pitches. Before the MPC4000 was released MPC's only supported drum programs which are simple in comparison to keygroups, but adequate for most drum programming needs.

With keygroups you can use the SPAN and ZONE parameters to set up velocity-switched and/or multisampled instruments, thereby allowing you to build and store a library of conventional instruments on the MPC4000 internal hard drive. You can assign multiple keygroups to the same range of notes, ie stacking samples to create unique, rich timbres (as shown in the image above). No need for external sound modules or virtual instruments. To exploit its use of keygroups the MPC4000 is compatible with Akai S1000/3000/5000/6000, Roland S7xx and E-mu sound libraries, use these if you don't enjoy creating custom multisampled instruments.

CC or continuous controller

In the MPC4000 you can get to CC assignment either by pressing the Qlink Setup and then going to to controller and choosing a number for that knob or slider.
Or once in the Program field and on the edit1, or edit2 screen...you have to have the coursor on one of the value numbers....then press WINDOW. You will be taken to the Modulation Programming screen. One of the source options is Controller. Here you will assign a Continuous Controller number to a destination. This is very convenient for usage with an external controller.

CC’s are commonly used for things like MIDI controlling volume (#7), pan (#10), data slider position (#6), mod wheel (#1) and other variable parameters.

Use of continuous controllers in performance and sequencing can be a major factor in adding life to MIDI music – but beware, over-use of CC messages can result in MIDI log-jam, where the amount of data being sent is more than the bandwidth of MIDI can support. (Most sequencers support commands for “thinning” CC data if this becomes an issue)

Reverses velocity, high velocity becomes low velocity, low velocity becomes high velocity (I think).

I tried modulating PITCH with both TILT and VELOCITY, and in both cases the behaviour is the same... so I think it's not reverse velocity.
