Removed HD now CD drive won't work, neither master nor slave

I removed the internal HD from 4000 because it was quite noisy and I was loading/saving via external USB anyway...

However, now if I try to open the CD drive, its read light comes on, it tries to open, then read light flashes twice and it gives up. I've tried it on both connections on the cable (the one it was originally connected to and the one the HD was connected to), and on master / slave / CS settings on each. The result is always the same. When the HD was connected, it worked fine... is there something I'm missing?

have you tried completely disconnecting the cd drive? removing the cable not only from the board of the mpc but from the drive itself, then reconnecting it?

If you are trying to eject using the CD drive button it doesn't work on the 4000 - You can only eject from the load screen, press F3. At least that's the way it works on mine and I've seen it mentioned several times by other users.
