My man Reveal and Mr Akai "Sean" talked about a new suprising O.S. update coming the end of this year and a beta this October. I did a little brainstorming and understand this is just a guess because Sean haven`t made any announcements of the 1.61 features but I surmised that the current O.S. 1.60 has audition samples which is streaming audio and spinning hard drive for the studio version 4k. A hard drive in a standard DAW is used for making audio files which in turn can be use to create audio regions. Unlike an audio file, a audio region takes up very little disk space "512 RAM" It just serves as a representation of the file that can be addressed by software. Audio regions can be assembled and put in any order. Most of the editing operations can be done on the region level nondestructively. Thus if akai works out the software properly the 4k will be able to have audio tracks and we will be one step closer to a audio multitrack sequencer. Currently all of the editing functions for working with digital audio are already working in the sample trim/edit sections. The audio tracks would be located on the hard drive which the previous MPCs never had. I`m not perfect and I have received no extra info but from the updates we had with the hard drive and the glee in Sean`s eye about a big unexpected features and reading how hard disk audio works it is my best guess. I for one don`t **** much about the 4k its a beauty because I do the same things with Pro Tools Digi 001 but it would be an logical step to answering the competitors "R" challenge and newbies wants. It`s all in the software program along with the audio streaming from the hard drive which is the key audio regions=audio tracks. It`s my best guess but please don`t go crazy, foaming at the mouth , bitching and shitting about a new O.S and how you can`t do shit with the midi sequencer now. It would be a new evolutionary step in the MPCs advancement. Sean or Reveal or somebody can step in later with more info.

On the other hand I might not know what the hell I`m taliking about I would not willingly start rumors I got too much invested on learning shit to do **** around.

Check the Akai dps board and exchange info on hard disk recording. :D

Afaik the streaming for disk feature is already implemented in the S5000/S6000 series of samplers. If so, there's a good chance that the 4k will get a similar implementation. Now I don't know the S5/6k samplers, but I think the way streaming will be represented to the user is by way of 'virtual' samples. These things look like normal samples as much as possible, with the main distinction that the sample data is sitting on the HD, and not in internal memory. So I don't think Akai will introduce a totally new structure like an audio region, while they can get the job done by only having a (major!) change in the last step of the structure hierarchy: the actual sample data. No need to make any dramatic changes to programs or multies that way, no big user interface changes. That's just my guess, of course.

Btw, in order to have virtual samples trigger as fast as normal RAM samples, they will need to pre-load the first part of each virtual sample in RAM, and while that part is being played back, they have time to load the rest from HD. It would take way too long to load the sample from HD the moment it is triggered. That's already a nasty piece of work. And recording a virtual sample on disk is also quite different from what they're doing now. Lot's of extra code and file handling stuff.

My guess that the introduction of HD streaming is already a LOT of work, even without the introduction of a virtual track concept, as done on the Roland machine.

But who knows, there's competition now, so they may have to do it. Not sure though if the average 4k user is waiting for this.

It all sound good but whatever.... Please can somebody ask 'Mr Akai' to do what loads of people (owners) want on this board. For me and many other....please..please...pleassseee... enable us to have different tracks looping at different intervals (each with their own time signiture if so desires)
eg:
track 1 looping around 0.5 bar with 4/4 timing
track 2 looping around 2 bars with 4/4 timing
track 3 looping around 1 bar with 3/4 timing
track 4 looping around 4 bar with 3/4 timing
etc...etc....etc...

keep up the good work y'all but the above would be a beauty of a Chrimbo present for me and many other users and would sure speed up 'da workflow...
peace.

I sent Akai my 'Individual Track Lengths' proposal, I got a reply from Sean that they received it. So it's known there. If they actually pick it up and implement it... hard to say, but who knows.

I would certainly like that, yes. 8)

so the benefit of the whole idea of streaming samples of hd is saving ram?? well that's great and all but I'm not feeling it as strongly as u Haze

Don`t hate on the messenger chew on it, taste it, and create on it. Those who has worked with Pro Tools audio regions have a idea what I`m talking about. Yeah at first if you don`t think or work with it at first you might be hesitant or resistant to each his own "I work with samples by the way". When hard disk recording was first developed in the late 1980s it was seen as an alternative to old fashioned tape-edting techniques which required an engineer to use a razor blade and splice tape on a physical piece of magnetic audio tape good ole sampling is akin to this and this kind of editing was by its very nature destructive. The advent of a hard disk recorder meant that pre-existing recordings could be transferred to ram, edited nondestructively, and then output back to a track. The hard disk system starts out by recording a linear performance, just like a sampler but after the recording goes to disk the audio can be manipulated in a number of completely altered performances. all of this can be accomplished while leaving the original recording intact. Do you even know how much time this will save editing samples and arranging in a sequence? The key to understanding how this works is understanding the relationship between the audio file(which is an absolute, linear tape recording) and an audio region(which is any section of an audio file tha can be edited nondestructively.) Audio files aka samples are uncompressed at full resolution and quite large in bytes 16/24 bit sample rate 44.1/48/96khz and channels mono and stereo files. On a hard disk whenever you record an audio file, your software creates an object that represents that file called a region. The first region always consists of the whole file; later you can make smaller regions that consist of parts of the file. Unlike an audio file, a region takes up very little disk space. It just serves as a representation of the file that can be addressed by your software. Regions can be assembled and put in any order. Removing the regions does not alter or erase the original audio file. The cpu of the 4k stores them both for safekeeping. Every region you create from an audio file can be stored for later recall. Most editing operations are done on the region level. These are nondestructive. Editing operations on the sampler now are done on the audio file level which are destructive because they change the original file to create something new unless you make copies with extract regions edit. The real beauty of this would be in the flexibility in working with audio, especially editing. The regions that you creat when you record and edit audio are contained in a master list sample list . The sample/master list could allow to import audio files from a cd and loop library Cds moving audio files to new locations and more.Cut, copy, paste, and trim especially for audio loop construction aka hot music productions allow you to assemble performances and sounds from diverse array of sources. Finally if you are sending in suggestions Reveal already sent in the Individual Track Lengths months ago write to akai professional at their website. I`m still just surmising how each new O.S. update has progress and this line of action seems to be the conclusion. Just sit back and observe how each update is code to build the 4k in which direction. the track lengths is cool I had it on the Triton especially with midi tracks. I don`t **** know if Akai is listening to the forum users or not. But I do believe that they have their own grand plan and this is my guess until Sean from Akai or others come out with the official strategy for the 4k. Expect an beta in late Oct/ early Nov. P.S. the average 4k user have already been doing this in a wave editor via aksys and the pros in the studio with TDM and logic.

But hey I may be wrong and Akai is going to have just bug fixes. But check for yourself and ask Sean. :D

If you aint feeling me juz walk away, this is just how I do, what more can i say yeah yea, Do you, cuz I ma do me, do you ******.

It`s a song by slum village glide that slides into my outro It just what I say jake. It uses the Zapp sample More Bounce to the Ounce with MC BREED and Jay Dee. It`s just what I say yeah yeaheee. It is a expression stating we disagree. Like I don`t know why I **** **** with you hip hop songs I`m listening to now. Just speak mane it a little funny to think what you just posted but no harm intended;however, digital audio it the stable of hip hop and dance music. And the easier it is to work with it the faster a mpc producer can work with it. Do you cuz ima do me ::::::. Listen to the song if you can off the new slum village Cd *****. It`s tight I mean its nice.

P.S. you maybe frustrated with the lack of new features in the MPC and deep down want to shot the messenger of different news that a feature you want is not be considered yet. I suggest turn that energy into a plus and bang out a banger tonight or ignore threads that doesn`t included your ideas and whenever you see Sean on the board jump that mofo with pms he answers back as when AKAI CORP gonna listen to you and make the changes.

it's all good haze, just making sure there wasn't a missunderstanding, I'll actually pick u up on that advice, I'm going to bang some beats down tonight, and uknow what, you'll be right here with me keeping the pappers burning :)

They ask are you ever going to fall off, NO!!!!! Time difference/different time zone I`m in Japan which is why I post late or earlier we are a day ahead of the States. MAD T are you selling meth? Cuz I`m not buying Crack dealer!!!!! Shit is bad for your brains since I have seen some crazy mofos in Hawaii on that shit for real!!! :D

Mad T crack dealer to help ya wise up, leave that crack along to get yourself up, educate yourself and don`t be a fool, organize yourself and open up a school drug dealer :D quote KRS-ONE with BH embellishments.

Just joking ET I mean MT I had a very informative source in front of me when I typed out my post as a reference so my post was long. Read and type to better explain the concepts of digital audio editing.

Don`t take too many quotes from hip hop songs too seriously I basically equate the MPC with Hip hop so I am what I am and what I am is a Hip Hop beats, rhymes, and life.

But like I say before Sean on DPS board talked of big, unexpected, features that Akai had never announced and probably were not going to impliement til the competition step to them to raise the bar. To me the MPC families are basicially the same with the exceptions of increase in number of tracks, sequences, editing fields, faster processing, and bit rates and resoultions. A full sampler, hard disk drive, 960 ppq, and a strongarm intel chip the 4K is the first. I just guess that with the updates we been having that Sean`s announce (which he hasn`t clarified totally) may be going towards digital audio editing. The tools are there just a matter of programming.

Anyway I may be totally wrong but it is a good strategy to draw Sean out and have him either deny it which show Akai is going to going for possibly new midi features ( Individual track features) or say no comment ( which tells me I may have hit it on the button).

Maybe someone else can guess where Akai`s development is heading for the 4K this Oct. :D
