Hi... As others have said, it's probably best to go somewhere that has them demo'd
so you can see exactly what is different, but as we all know not all place have in store
Demo's of the 4000, and with distribution changing to Numark in US it might be a while
until they get things sorted and organized.
So , I'll see if I can list a few. Only you really know if these features are important
enough for you to upgrade. An important thing to remember, is that currently
the 4000 can not play 1000 programs, but Sean W of Akai has indicated that this
is in the works and should be in a future OS update, so all of your hardwork on the
1000 won't be loss, when you upgrade.
Here are some differeneces, but I'm sure that their's plenty more.
1.
DISPLAY - This was a big factor for me. I'm trying to remove the Computer from as
much as I do, as I work on a computer for 12 hours a day , so when I make music,
I just want to sit down and start going. Having the bigger Display, has helped me
quite a bit, and has made the transition from Computer to MPC much easier.
2.
24 bit and 96khz sound quality. There plenty of debate on whether 24 bit or 96khz helps
with the sound quality. Pick which ever side you want. I definitely hear a difference when
I bump it 24 bit.
3.
60G or 80G harddrive
Enough Said on this. Storage means less transfers from the computer or one doesn't have
purchase costly $500 2G flash cards. 3 of those cards and you have used MPC 4000
4.
RAM - ability to go up to 512M
This is plenty for most people, but I could use more. The 128M that the MPC 1000
is a good amount, but if you are doing longer live sets (3 hours as compared 1 hour)
or you are using 24bit 96khz, then you'll definitely need more RAM ( I personally could
use more then the 512M that the 4000 gives us, but then again, one has to remember
that one can use a 256M Piano Sample)
5.
Sound OUTPUTS
Though the 1000 comes with more outs stocked then the 4000, the 4000 has
more expandability. You can have 8 outs instead of 6. You can have 8 ADAT outs
as compared to none on the 1000. I like having the Phono Pre-Amp and plugins direclty
on the back, so I can plug my 1200's directly in.

Midi Outputs:
1000 has 2 midi outs and 32 Midi Channels (for the outputs)
and 4000 has 4 midi outs and 64 Midi Channels.
If the MPC 4000 is at the heart of your studio, and you have a decent sized Studio
then these additional outputs are a MUST. If you don't have a lot of Studio Equipment
then this might not be as important.
7.
New 4-channel 24-bit/96kHz effects processor (standard)
I believe the 1000 has 2 channel, plus a Master channel.
Don't think the 1000's FX are 24-Bit/96kHZ
8.
Full Sampler, rather then a phraze sampler.
THe 4000 is the only MPC that can handle Keygroups. It is basiclly an Akai Z8 sampler.
Again, this up to what you want to do, but for sampling my Analog gear, I love this.
If one puts the work in and sets up the Keygroup program correct, it allows me to leave
SOME of my analog gear at home when I play live.
9.
USB connections.
On the 1000, it is basiclly a USB to Card Reader item. You can't use the MPC when
it's connected.
in the 4000, You can have the USB open and connected to Akai,Sys (more in Item 10 below).
You can use the other USB connection to hook up DVD drives, Harddrives, CD-ROM drives,
Zip/Jazz drives.

Akai.Sys
A godsend. Gives the advantages of the SoftSynth world connected directly to the advantages a hardware sampler/sequencer. Full control of everything in the Sampler
other then the Sequencer portion (hey AKIA PLEASE add Sequencer editing and viewing).

SCSI
If you need it, it's there. It's MUCH faster then USB.

TThere is 20 advantages to the MPC 4000. These were the obvious ones. There are more
The only reason I personally (for my needs) could see in getting the MPC 1000 (besides
price , though the price of new 1000 and used 4000 aren't that far apart), was the
actual size of the 1000. I can say from experience of carrying my 4000 to Band Practise
3 times a week. It's not a small or light piece, but it sure does what I want. Though
it's not like moving Rhodes or anything like that.
