Are you starting out in music completely? If so, I would imagine that the 4000 would be more harm than good. It may proove a tad discouraging to use such a gargantuan, involved machine. You don't want to be your machines **** . If you have experimented with other, simpler machines, it might be a good choice. It is probably the most professional station out there, and it wont make your songs for you like some OTHER machines.

I think its the most sexy thing since thong underwear.......but thats just me.

Do you know what a sequencer is?
Do you know what a sampler is?
Do you have a general understanding of MIDI?
Can you afford it?

If you answered yes to all those questions then I would get it. It's not a toy. Akai definately assumes you have a general working knowledge of how to make tunes before buying it.

BTW - hunt around for a good deal. As you may have noticed, many people are slagging this machine (personally I think they are insane). This is making it easy to get new&used ones cheap. ($1800 for mine off Ebay)

yes i do know what they are and i am doin alot of research b4 i get the one i want i know it wont make the music but i want some thing that will stand the test of time so i wont have to keep upgrading everytime i want better options ive use software and the triton but im a rookie to the mpc so my ? is the 4000 or the 2000xl thanks guys for your opinions they are very much needed[/b]

Why?

Can play so many programs.
Better quantizization features.
Better step writing.
Real good effects.
4 midi outs.
Nice size screen.
Nice clean sound can be dirtied up with internal effects.

Will not become outdated unless you let it. Lets be honest people are still using sp1200s, eps's, asr's, and mpc 60s. People still can make hits with them. The 4000, 2000, 3000, and xl all can make what you want it to. Also does a good job communicating with the computer through akai sys. and can read a wide variety of wav cd roms.

It is a little harder to work than a 2000xl but it is worth it.
