HD problem

Hi mpc fanatics!!!!

This morning i got shock (and still i'm).When i power my 4k on and went to load page my heart stopped as i see that my baby doesn´t recognize its HD. just says "unknown volume" .I restarted it three or four times and the same thing happens. My 4k is only two months old or so and i didn´t touch nothing in it....oh man what can i do?

open it up and check the cable conncted to the drive.

Sounds like a bad Hard Drive.

i opened it and there's nothing wrong with the connections.i will try with another IDE cable though.
i hope the warranty will be useful with this kind of problems if finally the HD is a defective one

What kind of drive do you have installed?
Not an IBM DeskStar I hope? These really have a bad name.

I've got the 4k plus and bought it in the U.S.guess they come with an IBM HD but not sure of that.

I have seen this before when I worked at AKAI. We would try the HD in other units and it would not work we would get the message UNKNOWN VOLUME. We ended up sending back the HD that didn't work for a replacement.

Try calling VST (if in the US), explain the problem and see if you can just send them the bad HD for a replacement. It will be cheaper to send the HD instead of the Whole unit.

I just noticed your Madrid, just call your local authorized service center.

Btw, the newer Maxtor drives are no longer compatible with the 4k. But I guess that's not the case here. I don't think they will work for 4 months and then die. The IBM deathstar drives *can* die that quickly though, but I believe IBM fixed that problem years ago. But maybe they didn't. And then there's still the option that you simply have a bad drive, or some other problem.

OK finally after descarting the IDE cable i tried what i've been avoiding all this time in order to keep all the data that was in my HD : tonight it was difficult for me to sleep and i think, if it says unknown volume, maybe for some reason ( somebody please tell me) it will need a format. it's like the HD went back to its primary existence

So i gave a full format to the unit, and that's it.Now it recognizes the HD, the only thing is that i've lost all what was inside (some of it wasn´'t backup)

thanks to all, i hope it won´t happen again in the following two months, anyway i¡m still shock with this problem.i'll like to know the cause of it.

So the filesystem got corrupted. Hmm, when you shut the mpc down the night before, did you shut it off while it was still saving, maybe? Or maybe you aready had some problem then?

Maybe it's one of those hiphop-phobic drives.

There is no excuse not to have back up's. Especially when the mpc4000 has a built in cdrw. I hope you learned a lesson.

No i didn´t shut the thing down while saving or similar and yes!! there's a big lesson i've learn : do backups every fckng night......

There is still the possibility that the HD can crash again. That is why I recommended calling a service center for a replacement HD especially since the unit is less than a year old, it's under warranty.
