You got it, basically a drum program contains one keygroup per midi note. When you change the midi note you are changing the entire pitch of that keygroup. Midi 33 always stays Midi 33.
But a keygroup program`s keygroup can contain more than two midi notes thus it has a greater range aka keyspan. Midi 1 thru 64 aka C0 thru C8 something like that. You can go up and down the scale ranges consecutively at varying pitches.
Using 16 level tuning, it has a imitation keygroup program setting to increase the midi note range (keyspan) of a keygroup temporary in a drum program. But when you turn it off the drum program returns to normal.
Now if you copy your sequence containing the same midi notes in the tracks. The tracks in the sequence will trigger the same midi notes which will trigger the same keygroups in the drum program. Thus each midi note you change with change the keygroup in a drum program.
A drum program only has one midi note for each keygroup. In a drum program one pad has one midi number each. Even if you change the drum programs the track will play the same midi notes and whatever sample is within the keygroup of that drum program.
Basically drum kits , phrase samples use a drum programs.
Bass, keys, and instrumental notes use a keygroup programs.
Can you just use a drum program yes but it is extra work organizing the pads into a consecutive note number struture and then assigning tuned samples to each midi note. When on the 4k it is already done for us in keygroup programs. The previous mpc were alot of work (check the MPC tutors mulitsample program tips) to set this up. Like I said before we have to get into the Z8 sampler mode of thinking to get the full potential of the 4k. I hope it helps peace.
Kits -drum programs
bass, piano-keygroup programs
keep it simple.
