Faulty error message? Please try this...

Before turning the mpc on, press down the window+shift buttons, startup the mpc4000 without letting go of window+shift and tell me what message you get in the display! I'm trying to figure out if this is a faulty error message so try this please!

So far 3 of us gets this (although only 1 really has any problems with the machine):

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"Flash ROM failure: ROM code is invalid!

Please reload system via USB OSLoader."

Happens here too, no problems with the MPC itself (so far) though. Sounds like a "false alarm" to me.

How did you come up with that 'key-combo' function? How do we know if it actually means anything? Has Akai actually published any text that confirms that pressing 'shift' and 'window' upon power-up actually means anything? I cant find it in the manual... It could mean nothing. Maybe pressing those 2 buttons, is what is causing a ROM failure?

I'm not trying to be a prick, I'm just curious why you think this is related to any bugs that exist within the 4000's current OS?

I hear ya earthmorphosis and I'm starting to believe that this isnt a big deal either. It was brought to my attention by a friend that is a local dealer and had some hd problems with an MPC4000 and he asked me to check if I got that message aswell and I did, so I asked a couple other friends and they also had that message pop up. My guess is that he got this "testing" info from the wholesaler or just stumbled across it, I'll ask him.

The reason I thought it might be of importance is the reply Sean (an Akai employee) at the DPS World forum gave my friend:

"This is very strange indeed, but it seems that there is a hardware fault in the flash rom circuitry and the machine needs to be returned for service.
In theory, it should not even work at all, but in your case, it seems that only a small part of the code gets corrupted."

Anyway, so far everyone that I know of that have tested it got the same error message, so I wouldnt worry about it...
