Sound On Sound Magazine has confused me now with this review

Hello peoples

I know the compatibility issue between an MPC4000 and an MPC2000 has been posted many times on this forum but i recently read this review of the MPC4000 by Sound On Sound magazine:

I always thought their was no file compatibility between the MPC4k and the MPC2k but this article states:

The new OS brings a number of new features (a full list is available at the Akai web site), including support for more USB storage devices, such as MO drives, HD drives and USB Flash. Support for more sample formats has also been added. Thanks to these upgrades, the MPC4000 is now compatible with the formats written by the following machines: Akai Z4, Z8, S1000, S2000, S3000, S5000, S6000, MPC2000, MPC2000XL, MPC3000, and Emu EIII. Emu E4 and Roland formats are to follow.

The review was written in September 2002 but now i am confused as to whether the 2 machines are compatible.

Can someone let me know if there is anyway of opening sessions made in the MPC4k on the MPC2k and vice versa.

It's always been possible to bring in these formats:

Akai Z4, Z8, S1000, S2000, S3000, S5000, S6000, MPC2000, MPC2000XL, MPC3000


Now, if it brings it in 100% like it sounded on the previous format WITHOUT any tweaking
is probably up to exactly what was being done by the program (it's not going to bring
your MPC 2000XL eb16 fx sounds to the MPC 4000 or try to translate them to the 4000's
FX). But sure , you can bring a program that was on the previous ones and use it
on the 4000. I use Hollow Sun's S-5000/S-6000 samples all the time and use my partners
MPC2000XL Drum Programs all the time.

I know that when played side by side on the same mixer/speaker setup, the MPC2000XL and the MPC 4000 playing the SAME drum program (one from his 2000XL) that the 2 machines
sound VERY different. The MPC 4000 sounded much more clearer and was more characteristic (from my ears) , I could hear more in the sound itself.

i work with a partner too. currently we both have mpc2000's. but after XMas I'll be getting an MPC4k. He won't be getting his MPC4K till at least summer 2005, so for 6 months or so we will have different MPCs.

It is reassuring to hear that there are other musical partnerships who have different MPCs.

I'll be checking out your website today.
