having major problems with 1.60+a question for Sean W

Hi I seem to be having some major issues with 1.60 on my mpc.for some reason it often crashes when i try to record a sample,and occasionally when i try to edit one in the sample edit menu.Since this was happening when accessing ram i thought it might be due to a ram problem,(odd though,since this never happened in 1.45 or my brief experience with 1.51..or really at all in the 2 years ive owned the machine)..so i opened the machine and moved the ram to a different spot which helped initially,but after a day it went back to its misbehaving.As well some of the multis i save to the internal HD wont open,saying it is corrupt(I think maybe an error 467?,im not near the mpc right now)

These crashes happen when im sampling through the phono input,after i press "stop" during sampling.It will just freeze with the meters at wherever they were when i hit the button.In the sampling edit menu it freezes occasionally when i try to trim a sample.

I am installing the O.S. through the USB from my powerbook867 using the OSLoader utility.Would i maybe be better off to try it a different way?This issue is really puttin me off and slowing down my workflow.

Sorry,I actually have 2 questions for Sean,1st is..back when AMIC was handling the distribution for akai I contacted them about them replacing the ram that came installed in my mpc (it was cl2 and it needed cl3,or the reverse {its been a while:)})They gave me an RA number,and just as I was about to send away to them,they went under and i was unable to get a hold of them again.Is there any possibility that i might still be able to get that taken care of?I lost the RA# because it was in my wallet,which was stolen when i was robbed at gunpoint last Easter.I realize its been a long time,but possibly there might be a record somewhere of our arrangement?My name is Shaun Bocking,form Victoria B.C. Canada.This would be really good,as id be able to really depend on the akai specific ram.

btw im not using the ram that came stock in my mpc,that was totally unusable,i had to buy some..so thats not the problem im having with 1.60.

Second question is: It seems that every time I reload a saved Multi it cant find some of the files,this is usually 2 or so,but sometimes up to 44?Is this maybe a sign that my hard drive is going to the glue factory?Ive been scared and backing things up like a madman,but i really hope thats not the case as im a broke ass starving artist with a huge mortgage.

Are you moving files around to different directories or what? I know that could be an issue. Have you renamed them or anything?

no i havent been moving them around,though when i save them it is usually to a sub-folder of the one i opened it from,could this be a problem maybe?Ill try maybe saving them a different way

When you load up that multi the samples should be in the same folder so that the MPC can FIND them easily ya understand.. Can't find files outside a folder, they need to be IN that folder with the multi.

Oh no i think you mightve misunderstood i jus usually keep all the updated sequences in consecutive subfolders which i suppose might confuse the mpc. It would look like this

4000hd/Dopebeat Folder/dopebeat.pgm,dopebeat.multi,dopesample.snd Dopebeat2 Folder/dopebeat.pgm,dopebeat.multi,dopesample.snd

So you can see that the samples are in the same folder as the multi,but the Folder (.all) Is located in the folder of the first save,I just find it easy to navigate this way,just keep pressing right,and it opens to the most current version of the song,,u feel? AHHHH! You must have that Samsung memory installed. I had one hell of a time trying to track down all the units. APMI hadn't told us of the potential problms with CL3 DIMMS. Since that was a problem from AMIC specific problem, I don't know what can be done. A record of of your arrangment? It went in the dumpster.

You need to get CL2 PC 100 or PC 133 with 16 chips, 8 per side.

Now, I wonder if there are still DPS 24's out there that still need the cap mod.

Oh well,it cant be too expensive...ill try to track down some other ram and see if that'll help things at all.Thanks for the help,but still hoping someone else can chime in with some help with the other problems,or maybe someone else is having similar problems?

Try removing the stick of RAM you have installed and only use the on board 16 MB of ram. If the probem goes away it could be the RAM you have is incompatible.

Yes, I did work for AMIC. I think only 20 units or less were sent out to retailers with the bad RAM, but I did have to open at least 50 units of MPC 4000 and 20 Z samplers just to switch the RAM. It wasn't as bad as the time we didn't know we were suppose to move a jumper after we installed a CD drive. We had to recall 150 units from GC and I had to open all of them just to move a jumper pin. That killed my back for days!
