I‘m also a late MPC4K starter... and though I consider it‘s sample editing well implemented, I‘m way faster (and more precise) in desktop apps.
The most efficient approach is Akai’s AKsys, ie you edit/chop files in your favorite Mac/PC editor and create programs in AKsys.
Afaik there are no „modern“ applications featuring the 4000‘s OS.
AKsys is a quite solid „remote control“ and file management system.
Depending on environment (Win, MacOS9, OSX) there may be some hickups, but no show stoppers.
In my case (MacOS9) it may may skip some samples when dealing with huge numbers of files, so it‘s worth to compare source and destination at the end of the process.
(applies to S1000/3000, EMU, Roland CD conversion)
In OSX drag and drop fails (at least in some versions). No experience with Win on my side.
But over all it‘s a well done software... or rather brilliant if compared to what seems to be the standard of current development...
