Anyone using akay.sys in 2024 ?

I just sold my 10 years friend mpc2500 and got me a 4000. I want to transfer some samples via usb to the HD, seems like I got to use AK.sys, right ? Anyone here managing to get AK.sys to work on a m1 mac in 2024 ?

window xp vm running in your favorite hypervisor (virtual box is free and fine) is one of the best approach.

one day maybe this alternative for moderne hardware (windows still): http://s56sys.free.fr/
may be open to mpc4k users

No need for ak.sys to transfer „some samples“ ;)
Just copy them to a USB stick, load from there into memory and then save to the 4K’s internal drive.
(there‘s no copy from media function)

Ak.sys is way more convenient if large amounts of samples and programs are to be transferred, like from a S1000 CD Rom.
(and of course for remote controlling with a big screen)

Oh that's much better indeed. I think I'll also open the mpc, get the HD out and copy my whole drum library. Do you know the file convention on the 4000 (16 characters maximum file name size? ). Maybe I'll have to rename the entire library with some batch renamer or something.

Dunno any details about the MPC4K‘s file system, but 16 chars seems reasonable (iirc 20chars may be entered, but not all visible, depending on disk hierarchy)

If you plan to copy with the M1 Mac, read this first:

(while about SD cards, the same applies to any drive mounted by a current Mac)

btw ak.sys doesn‘t run well on any OSX Mac, let alone an M1.
Mine is on OS9 and I noticed it occasionally skipped samples when bulk-converting CD Roms.
Not a big deal, but of course annoying if you only find out later. Now I check if source-target match in file count, while the original data is still loaded.
In all other aspects ak.sys is a rather sophisticated and well designed software. :smoker:

i just did that yesterday (batch renaming a wave alchemy library)
i have an old laptop (so old it has still a built-in floppy drive) running AK.SYS
when you copy multiple folders to one (on the MPC) there's indeed the 16char length restriction
AK.SYS will seems to copy it alright, but the similar named(but longer) samples don't turn up in the target folder, that's why i batch renamed first
(i don't want 100.000 folders to browse)

so as long it is not residing in the same folder, there's not much of restrictions (apart from the usual characters)

It's crazy that I can use something like crossover app to open a windows xp app, but we don't have nothing like it to open old osx apps on mac. BTW anyone have tried to use ak.sys with any of this windows wrappers ?

Never tried because the OS9 MacG4 runs anyway for Pro Tools TDM and SoundDiver.
But I have a Mini M1 and Crossover, the latter running surprisingly well on the M1.
(in particular compared to the version on Intel MacPros during the OSX 10.6 period) :smoker:

I've tried to install aksys 2.53 on all windows versions available on crossover but app just doesn't open up after install. Any thoughts ? I'm running Monterey on M1 macstudio.

I took a look at this but seems that is a cloud computer that you rent so you have to really install the operating system from scratch, it got me lazy just thinking about it.

Back when I have Win 7, I ran vmware, WinXP vm, ran ak.sys inside on Win XP. Worked fine.

These days on Win11, virtual box, WinXP vm, ak.sys inside of that. Works fine.

I rarely use it, but, it does work.
