Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

Ok I'm not quite getting the mod destination "zone select" I asume it will play different zones one at a time aslong as the keyspawn dosn't overlap

so in theory I could create mini Wavetable synthesis:

Using Lfo: Triangle Saw up or Saw down modulation with the zone select as destinations, and having a slow rate on the lfo thus slowly running through all 4 zones

imagine what you can do:
a small loop x4 with indipentant loop-points per each loop in a 4zone cyrcle (moving pads ala wavestation) ect .. great !!, and you can even mix completely different osc and have them warp from zone to zone maybe with a little overlap in keyspan and crossfadeing & you'll get some very cool high quality warping Osc's .. la wavetable, absolutly fantastik sonic sculpting for experimental preformance..

now the only problem I seam to be having is that Zone select is just not doing its thang,.. is there a trick, sertain ammount to be set or a key setting I need to imply.. as I'm not getting any effect at all ??

right so the conspet is there

in theory

ooh wait just found something Zone X-fade, set it to Realtime instead of velocity ...

Holy-shitz is this not just the coolest fking thang out there..!!!

try sampled brass work with dif pan & HP filter settings...just hold one pad down and instant party left right upside down ... and you can even sync it to midi clock... :D :D :D

ohh man still just learning this motherfoker.. this is Wicked!!!!

Been trying to figure this out for awhile..

You are the man....

What Iam gonna use it for is changing snares in an out

why I thought you where the man!, or Renegade or is Alto?? I know Rob is the runner up & is makeing us all sweat :D

but Yhea this is a wicked feature !!!! I'll add this to the Newibe Bible along with some other stuff soon.. as this is just so marvelus ...

its great for creating Arp fx.. or a semi arpegio, take 4x dif guitar loops (very short of corse with just some simple guitar picking melody, (delay fx are always nice in this enviroment), set up dif pan & filters per zone, press the pad and it will morph between the guitar loops (whoa...

there are endless possibilities, take fxmple: a MS20 TB SH101 and a Moog osc (all free avalible from hollow sun), set the joint up and play a bassline,, the sound will morph between the synths/Osc while the bassline playes, edit you lfo anyway you like (they are so editable its a joy) and you'll have bassline sound no one ever heard before ...

getting into the q sequence as well, amazing stuff,,

geez I feel like selling all my synths now..

aslo I might aswell throw this in here, some basic synth stuff

Osc = short loop (u can even use air if the loop rotates fast enugh you have sound, correct me if I'm wrong but I do think this is called Frequency Modulation (FM although true FM is much more complex with a few modulators

the longer the loop the lower the tone (high freq faster cycle, low =slower cycle

Detuning = set up the same Osc in Zone2 and tune it -/+ a few cents
a nice way of getting chargter or even fattening up a string sound

Sub Osc = Same Osc tuned one Octive below,
gives the sound more bass

Now how does Ring modulator work, ? can we simulate it within the 4k anyone?

Heh heh 8)

Here is a contribution from the Akai mail list, from a thread that I started last friday with David Davis, the guy that learned me the Zone Select trick for emulating analogs:

----------------
Thanks Jeremy, that was one of problems indeed. The other
one was that I hadn't assigned each of the zones its own
velocity range. Stupid me.

But works great now. As David originally suggested, using
and LFO with random waveform gives you a nice mechanism to
have the mpc select one of up to four samples to play at
note on, to simulate analog variation (using closely
matching, but not identical samples).

If you don't want the zones to be changed *during* the
playback, simply set the LFO rate to 0. The LFO output
level is also an important factor to get a good balance
between the various zones, as David already found out.

I also toyed with syncing the LFO to tempo. That's fun! You
can mix the zones in and out at a given rate, synced to
tempo. Very nice stuff. :)))
---------------

I did some more experiments later on and it works great! Try this:

- Get two drum loops with identical BPM.
- Set the MPC's main tempo to the tempo of the drum loops.
- Puts each of the loops in a zone of the same voice.
- Give each of the samples their own velocity range,
like 0-64 for zone 1 and 65-128 for zone 2.
- Set the Zone Select field to realtime.
- Set LFO1 to random waveform.
- Set the LFO's Midi Sync field to ON.
- Set the LFO Beat Field to 1 or 2 (change as you like).
- Set the LFO Depth to 50 or so.
- And finally, make a Program Modulation setting in the modulation
matrix with LFO1 -> Zone Select

This will do a real-time and random fade between the two drum loops, but synced to tempo! If the two drum loops are similar, like variations of the same beat, you get a great live feal, because the drum pattern is never the same. Very, very, very cool! 8) 8)

hahaha ... yo glide - funny dude ... count me outhere - i m still a learner of this monster and will surely be for some more time ... or better - i fear this beast will be an endless learnin process ... so if you r lookin for the "man" it must be someone else ... and this thread is a niceone with some real nice hints ... i haven't messed with zone select for a while now - bit gonna check it out soon again ..
bangin beaz

Damm man you just put it plain and simple rob you officially the man...

Good to see some yahoo thredies on here...

I just tried the drum loop experiment and it worked wonders...
U have opened up the world of too much possiblities..
Sit back and thank yourself..
Cause Iam blown away.

You just made my job so much easier

Ive sat here for almost 2hours and heard all diff variations in this beat just from two loops..

And its all diff..

I just have been recording these natural mpc breaks.
You fixed my problem by putting it on 1 and 2 so on b/c I had it on 1/8 1/2 and was wondering why it was so choppy thanks..

I am Going to record these loops all night
Peace

Glad you like it! :D

I love this trick!
Now imagine what you'd get with 3 drumloops. Or with the second LFO added to the game!

Now how does Ring modulator work, ? can we simulate it within the 4k anyone?

Ring modulator takes two signals and produces a signal containing the sum and differences of the two signals frequencies. These frequencies will typically be non-harmonic, so the ring modulator can create some very dissonant sounds. This is a bit complex and people agree ring modulation is a hard effect to master as you never know what the result will be.

How to do this in the 4K If it can be, I don't know.

hey guys it sounds great all those experimentation but could someone be so kind to write a tutorial on that ?, because honestly i don't quite understand how to do it !
