Can I have more than 1 program playing simultaneously?

Calling all MPC4000 experts.

I am about to upgrade my trusty old MPC2000 to the mighty MPC4000. However, there is something I really need to know.

Can you have more than 1 program playing in your sequence at the same time. I have tried to do this on the MPC2000 but it didn't seem to work. I can have several programs within my sequence but they cannot play at the same time.

For example, say I had an Electro Drums program which I loaded into the MPC4000 and sequenced some drums with on Tracks 1,2,3 and 4 of Sequence 1.

Then I wanted to lay down some Rhodes sounds so I loaded up my Rhodes program. Could I sequence some Rhodes cords on Track 5 of the same Sequence using my Rhodes program while Tracks 1,2,3 and 4 are still playing the sounds from my Electro Drums program?

Now if this could be done, can I then load up my Solina Strings program and sequence some strings from this program on Tracks 6,7 and 8 of the same Sequence, while the Electro Drums program and Rhodes program are playing.

I hope I am explaining myslef well enough. If someone out there can answer me this I would be most grateful as I really want to use the MPC4000 to its full potential.

Hi Kid,
The MPC 4000 has brought over the Z8/Z4 sampler engine to the MPC line. The MPC 4000
uses Multi's which are made up , of up to 128 different programs. All 128 Programs
are available at the same time, while the Multi is loaded up. Any of them can play
at the same time, but you are limited to the Polyphony (64 at 48khz and below and 32 at 96khz). But yes, I do this all the time.

Have 1 program that is a Mini Moog Bass.

Have 1 Program that is Arp Solina Strings

Have 2 other programs that are loops sliced up and sequenced

Have 2 different Drum Programs and then use all at the same time to make my song.


Not a problem on the MPC 4000.


Oh yea, and on the MPC 4000, each Program can have up to 128 different zones or pads (though you are limited to 96 pads)

yes but you can also do this with the xl just can have as many due to memory thats one of the biggest reasons why I came to the 4k from my 2k (classic)

2. Where do you get your moog bass and solina string programs? Is it from Hollow Sun? If so are they good quality?

Yes, bit the limit on the 2kxl is 4 programs (DRUM1, DRUM 2, DRUM3 AND DRUM4)

By 'zones' I can only imagine he is referring to the keygroups. Programs are divided into keygroups that can contain one or more midi note values. The limit on the number of keygroups is 128.

A keygroup can be a single pad (Drum programs) or a range of notes across a keyboard (Keygroup program). It just depends on what you're trying to achieve.

Plus you can layer 4 sounds within a keygroup and modify those sounds individual tuning, filter, start point and velocity which are called zones.
