I would say a PROGRAM cannot be mono.
A program is a data collection of settings and assignments.
Make a copy of the wave/sample and modify/edit the copy and leave the original alone. In case you mess up the copy you can always go to the original and make another copy and start over.

not sure whether i m correct on thisone so hit me if i m wrong ... i kinda agree with lampdog and kinda don't ...
anyways imo ...
1. a program - if assigned to individual outs and run into a monochannel at my mixer plays back the samples assigned to it mono ... not that the sample itself gets mono but if i got it right in that case only the left side of a stereosample gets played back (sended to mixer)... so reading your question i guess thats what you're after ... you won't destroy your stereosample but have it play back mono ... example: a stereo bd sample assigned to out 1 => imo only left side of sample gets sended out ... dunno feedback please ...
2. if you take a keygroup pgm ... under pgm misc you can set it to monolegato ... well ... dunno haven't further investigated in thatone but i guess if it says monolegato it ll be kinda mono too ... ins't it?
3. and regarding the sample itself: if you use sample - edit ... stereo to mono you ll get 2 samples out of your stereosample ... one for the left one for the right ... choose either one and it ll be mono, choose both and layer them and you can get your stereosample back out of the 2 monos ...
... anyone else please coz i ain't really sure myself that everythin just typed is fully correct ...
