the Akaisys software is the only that i know of that will officially link the MPC's harddrive to the computer. Akaisys is a free utility for both Mac's and PC's:

hy seight ... dont worry - aksys doesn't rock here either! ... i use it for backin up and sometimes to setup some multisampled stuff ... and over!... i know others use it more and better ... for example you could use your mouse to mess around in multis and programs and it will have immediate affect, the pad editor might be nice to setup drumprograms but that worx like a charme within the 4k too imo. but sounds like your producin with mac and 4k - if so i d say aksys is the best thing to bring your stuff from 4k to mac and viceversa ... still - imo you better dont expect it to rock ... thats the 4k's job ...

sorry seight ... i fully misunderstood you before! ... and now i cant really help you either - i am no mac user - i m sure anyone else will ...
there s the aksys downloads but you probably got em already ...
http://www.akaipro.com/int/download/aks_dload.html
download the aksys_install.zip there .. i just seen they wrote some lines - here they are
INSTALLATION - MAC
Install aksys23 using the Installer. This will be suitable for Z4, Z8, MPC4000 and S5/6000.
If you want to use the extra S5/6000 program editor themes, download the file ‘themes.sit.hqx’
and unstuff it. Now open the ak.Sys folder and place the THEMES folder in the PLUG-INS
folder.

well the first thing i wondered was what operating system are you using? also, if you're on OS X 10.x.x you shouldn't have any problems. you might want to throw out/delete the Akaisys software you installed. i would suggest deleting Akaisys, then opening Disk Utility and repairing your permissions.
you can get to Disk Utility by going to your Applications, Utilities ,and Disk Utility is located in there. once you've opened it up. select your drive (volume containing OS X), then you want to Verify Permissions and then Repair Permissions on the selected drive. this may take a minute and if you've never done it...this is a good task to do on your system (cleans it up..but this isn't a defrag utility). there is also a freeware utility that'll automate Verifying/Repairing permissions as well as it performs many other useful functions called Onyx: http://www.titanium.free.fr/english.html
ok, now that you've gotten through that (i hope), let's move on. what OS is your MPC4k running? you should definitely update to 1.70. you'll need the OS Loader for OS X: http://www.akaipro.co.jp/jp/datalib/dow ... Loader.sit
and here's ver. 1.70's link: http://www.akaipro.co.jp/jp/datalib/dow ... m4c170.zip
(if for some reason those don't work, just go to www.akaipro.com ...international is a bit faster)
now on your desktop you should have the 'OSLoader' and a file called 'mpcv170.1.bin'. install/place the OS Loader into your Applications folder of OS X. now that you've put that in your Application folder and the you've downloaded ver. 1.70, turn you MPC4k and make sure you have the USB cable connected properly (rear MPC USB cable to available MAC usb port). now open 'OS Loader' in your Applications and drag & drop the 'mpcv170.1.bin' onto the OSLoader. it'll tell you what to do from there.
the Akaisys software should work without a hitch. so if you deleted it and Verified and Repaired permissions, i'd download the Akaisys software again. make sure to download and read the Akaisys documentation. here's the link for the Akaisys software: http://www.akaipro.co.jp/jp/datalib/dow ... SXV261.dmg
here's the documentation: http://www.akaipro.com/int/download/aksys261.txt
if you follow all of that, then you should be fine. if you don't understand any of these directions and/or have a question, hit me back. also if you do all of this and it still doesn't work, let me know which part isn't working or if something 'didn't' seem right. also, check your USB.
good luck

First off, THANX for that very descriptive msg.
I am on OS X, I updated the 4000 to 1.70 weeks ago.
My mac won't recognize the AkaiSys for some reason. There's nuthin' to launch the application, or so my computer says. I've downloaded the latest version of AkaiSys and it's icon on my mac is one of those blank sheets of paper, you know when the mac doesn't recognize it? this is very mind bogglin'.
P.S. do you know of any FREE downloads that convert aif file to wav (and not one at a time like audacity)?

once you download the Akaisys.dmg from akai's site and then you double click to open-it, there should be two items initially contained within: a folder 'akSysV261' and a .pkg file. just copy the 'akSysV261' folder into you Applications folder. inside that folder is the 'AkSys' application and FX presets. just make sure that when you download AkaiSys ver. 2.61 for OS X that it shows up on your desktop as 'akSysOSXV261.dmg', if so things are good. then unpack and follow the above.
and if you follow all of that and you still just see 'AkSys' as looking like a folder, right click on it (or click once and 'Get Info' [under 'File' of Finder]) and 'Get Info', if in the Get Info is doesn't say 'AkSys.app' then change it to say that. the important thing is that your initial download came as a .dmg file. then that you double clicked on it and saw the file components and installed them.
here's a some simple conversion software:
http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/10381 Free, simple...comes in handy. just add the file(s), or drag them, set what 'Format' you want (your case .wav), also in Preferences you can tell mAC3dec if you want 'same location' if not just uncheck-it and it'll ask where you want the new .wav's to go. and hit start. ...i woundn't do more the say 15-25 at a time, you might choke this little application if you do.
http://homepage.mac.com/jonn8/ntf/NtF.sit this one is like $12.50 but very nice for not just Audio but throughout OS X. also you change large amounts of files quickly and easily. i mean hundreds!
you can always convert with iTunes as well, if you wanna do that let me know and i'll write a quick tutorial.
good luck
