mac G4 - aksys - please help.

G4 running OS9.2.
Sorry if Im being a little dumb here. Im trying to get aksys on my mac. Ive downloaded it from the website. When I double click the 'aksys253.exe' file it come up with:

"aksys253.exe.sit" could not be opened, because the application program that created it could not be found.
Could not find a translation extension with appropriate translator.

Ive checked all my extensions but this made no difference. Maybe Ive downloaded the aksys PC version or something? If so, I cannot find a mac one. Ive never had this problem with any other program ever (the OS loader + latest Os went on a breeze without a hitch)
I hope Im being real stupid here.
Help very much appreciated.

Make sure you type out the full name of the file. If it is missing that .exe.sit part it won`t open welcome to the world of macs I got a G4 too.

Yo Haze,
Thanks for your help. You were right about the downloaded file missing the
.sit part but unfortunately, when added, this still dosent help! Im still getting the original message and it wont open. Ive also tried in vain to drop the file into 'Stuffit Expander' and some weird unzip program I have. Ive been banging my head against the wall for hours with this now. I need aksys working to sort my files. Anymore help appreciated.

All sorted out now. Silly mistake on my part.

Ok..Ok.. Im gonna have to come to terms with this now, you forced me into it by asking for my help.
I was downloading the wrong file. I feel the support page at akaipro really need to be made a little clearer for what is for PC's, what is for macOS9 and what is for OSX.
At the top of the page the aksys.exe(what I was originally downloading is for PC's)..oops..
,then if you scroll down to the next 'paragraph' of downloadable files you will see aksys.hxq (this is what you want for OS9)
,below that I figure is aksys for OSX.

It messed me up because in 4 years of using a macG4 on OS9.2.2 I have never come across a .hxq file ever.

Hope this helps Dutch and all those that are thinking f*ck, this aksys s*it wont even load.

Hey quest5, any chance of you upgrading your G4's Operating System to OSX? The Tiger is gonna be released at the end of this month. Looks like a really good way to make the transition if it at all interests you.

Tiger? No way.. my G4 flies/is rock soilid on OS9.2.2.
I tried panther = cr*p, I then wasted money on Jaguar = sh*t.
Os 9.2.2 rocks for me.
If I ever get a dual G5 then Tiger it is, or is that snow fox, umm, or maybe big-bear...

Just thought i'd throw it out there. I've been using Macs for 9 years now and it was a very slow transition for me. I couldn't see the reason for changing over so drastically. OSX is like another computer. It's not a PC platform and it's definitely not OS 9.2.2. I'm a graphic designer and i know what you're saying about files, they're my life. But my experiences in OSX have been so much better than they've ever been on OS 9....to each his own. Glad you've gotten through your previous problem. I'm sure we can both agree that the 4000 is the best MPC to date.

Agreed. The Mpc4000 is my first MPC and Wow! It truly is a great machine. Only been rockiing it a few weeks but am enjoying the experience of writting music on it so much more than I ever did on a PC or Mac. The 4k is totally dope

Can I ask... Are you running OSX on a dual G4 or a G5? I have been thinking about making the switch but i 'only' have a G4 single processor Quicksilver (jaguar and panther just ran too slowly compared to OS 9.2.2)+ I like to be able to assign my memory to the programs I use/need the most = speed.
Do you know if this new 'tiger' thing will have any benefits to my single-processor G4.
One day when I get a G5 dual 2.4ghz monster + liguid cooling .yum..yum..yum then its obviously OSX all the way from there.

+ One plug-in I cannot live without.. BBE Sonic Maximizer, made by Virsonix (just gone bust unfortunately). They never released an AU version of it. Apparently there is a 'wrapper'/'wrapped VST version available somewhere but.. It worries me... (wrapped VST plug-ins). Do you have any experience with VST wrapper in OSX, are they solid and good?

Your first MPC? Wow! What a fresh way to start out. This is my 2nd MPC that i've owned and 4th MPC that i've used. I used to own the first MPC 2000 and i thought it was world. I used the MPC 2000XL a lot - going back and forth from my friends' houses. It wouldn't read the MPC 2000 sounds and i thought that sucked. I used the MPC 60II in the beginning and that was so much better than using the Akai s950 Rack Sampler. Here i am today, owning and using the best MPC ever made. I'm so glad i chose to step it up.

I'm running OSX on a G4 Dual 500mhz Gigabit Ethernet Desktop with 1.5gb of RAM, in which i've enhanced with a Gigadesigns Dual 1.4GHz Processor Upgrade. I can't afford the 2.5GHz G5 right now, but it'll be my next computer purchase, one day. Until then, i am certain that this upgrade will hold me well. It works perfectly! Most of the applications i use require dual processing and that's why i went with the computer i have. I've also got a Maxtor 120gb IDE Drive for my master hard drive and a Maxtor 250gb IDE Drive for my Pro Tools files. I've installed the Sonnet Tempo Trio card in my computer so that it can utilize the full 250gb of that drive. I've partitioned it with OS 9 running on 12gb, i use it for my Photoshop/Illustrator plug-ins that haven't upgraded to OSX. Classic Mode in Panther works perfectly - it's just like having OS 9.2.2 on your computer, for whenever you need it.

I used to experience the slowness in Puma, Jaguar & Panther that you mentioned, before i upgraded my processor. I also used to experience daily crashes and i've learned that it was because, i hadn't done a clean installation of OSX. Also, since OSX is a RAM hungry operating system, i decided to max out my on-board memory. All of the above has contibuted to a healthy OSX environment for me.

I don't have any info on your computer specifically and its dealings with OSX but, you have a Quicksilver model and you shouldn't be having any problems - even with a single processor. Tiger will be the most updated version of OSX and i can only believe that it will work better than Panther - which to me, is a great system.

I also have a Blue & White G3 Desktop that i've only been running Panther on - it's been working fine. As long as i don't open too many applications at once, i'm alright. Is your RAM maxed out? My G3 is 400mhz but, the on-board memory's at its peak. This could be why Panther's working on such an old computer - i don't think your single processor is as big of a problem.

I can't comment on the wrapped VST plug-ins topic because, i haven't crossed it. All of the plug-ins i use for music are OSX based and none of them are wrapped. If you have any questions about OSX and your model of computer specifically, you could always check out the Apple Discussions Forum. Any questions i've ever had, have been answered times ten on there. Hope this helps your decisions.
