Can the screen be turned off??

Ive heard that its safe for all studio equipment to be left ON 24/7. Including the MPC4k. Though its best for its screen to be turned OFF. Now iam guessing notm but is this possibale?

Do you mean that all the gear should be turned on like forever ? All day, all week for the rest of the month, for the rest of the year, as long as we live? When should we turn our gear off then?

My Akai racker has a screensaver, maybe this is an idea for a future update.

i never turn my computer off but i turn the MPC off because there is no screen saver unfortunatly, otherwise it would be on all the time

the reasoning behind the "always leave your gear switched on" thing
is that powering up is the most stressful time for electronics,
and so when you switch on you get spikes and surges and that's when
components can get damaged.

So if it's always on you avoid all that.

Downside is it costs money, generates heat and noise (acoustic and electrical) and makes my mother worry that the house will burn down (mother, it's not the 1950s any more!)

There are some SysEx commands regarding the LCD screen but I can't remember what they are, but if you're less lazy than me, go read the MPC4000/Z4/Z8 SysEx Spec (v1.5) downloadable from Akai's wabsite.

yeah thats what my teacher was saying aswel.
i think synthesizers shouldnt be left on for long though. if i remember right. coz they burn out or some sh!t.

Powering up is the most stressful time for electronics, but that is protected by Fuses, power conditioners, and some power supply circuitry if it is well designed.

Ask any EE, the number one cause for electronic compnant failure is Heat. heat lowers the lifespan of all electronics. Leaving gear on all the time is just like burning a candle at both ends. plus your backlights will last much shorter, less than half as long than if you just switch on for a session.

Gotta love internet rumours and half. Also, if your gear is on and your line gets hit by lightning kiss it all goodby and call your insurance agent.

Not that just having it off will save you totally, unplugged will.

yeah but power supplies aren't and conditioners aren't always designed brilliantly (cos this is expensive)

Manufacturers prefer to give users features, than spend money on under-the-hood esoterica like power supplies.

Conversely, if something is well designed, it will maintain a pleasant steady-state temperature, rather than damage itself!

If lightning strikes, the only proper protection is not being plugged in to the wall at all!

the sysex page is chinese for me but on page 46 there is "ascii keyboard" & "mouse operations"... does this mean we can connect a mouse to the mpc?
