This is a small tip nothing special. One luxury of the 4k is the monitor mode in all pages of the program, sample edit, step edit, and multi. It is very useful to turn the monitor to multi so that you can hear in realtime your adjustment to the parameters as your pattern plays.
Rather than hitting the pads and adjusting the filters, envelopes, modulations and etc then making a pattern in the 4k. Just make up your pattern either solo the track or use velocity to turn down the other go to program hit the individual pad and either program or pad editor in qlink and adjust away as the sequence plays that way you can mix it by ear each part.
Same thing working on samples in sample edit assign it to a pad in a program press play and change sample monitor to multi and edit the length, start and end points as it plays.
Also in step edit since the monitor plays the notes you can line up your hits by ear using the step key and step inputing your patterns also if you make a mistake listen go back erase and hit in the note by ear. Its basic tips for newbies if other vets already posted oh well or want to add more please do.
The 4k change my work habits coming from 2xl it make not be visional like my Pro Tools on my G4 but the 4k definitiively works aurally when sequencing on the 4k..

Last tip turn down the headphones and listen to your pads.
Of yeah the best piece of new gear is a good book, practice, practice, practice programming, and using your mind first and experiment don`t be afraid to fck up you may stumble on something new, use the manual second and learn what the hell off velocity means, and then ask yourself what might I done wrong instead of kicking your 4k you paid money for it master that bitih. Then please check the newbie bible so you won`t be another herb asking the same question that was answered last week you will understand after 4 months when you start to see other newbies come to the board just like you are now.
Then ask the question directly at Lampdog, Dave, Rob, and others cuz they will gladly help ya. But if you skip the above then that when Lord Toranaga, AWWNAWW, and the Vets will have to break their foot off in that ass its a joke but get the picture and go make some fabulous music.
