Is the 4000 that much better than the 2000xl?

Why don't you buy a used 2000? It costs less than a 2000XL. If you like it well enough, then you can resell it for about the same amount that you paid for it. Then after you have some experience you can decide if you should upgrade to the 2000XL or wait for the 4000. The 2500 might be out by that time, so you will have even more choices within a price range that fits your budget.
