What are the short list of "Bugs" in the 4K?

I think I saw somewhwere that MPC Producer highlighted a few but called them quite insignificant in the whole scheme.

I own the 2KXL and have had MAJOR problems with the thing freezing up since day one...and it finally completely crashed. My posts in the 2KXL forum outline my frustrating history.

I took it in to the local authorized repair place today (10 days short of the warranty expiring !! )...and am seriously considering the 4K.

Since owning the 2KXL, I've been repeatedly told by the 1-800 Akai Tech support guys that..."well, what you're trying to do on this machine..is'nt really what it was made for"... in other words, the 2KXL is designed MORE as a Drum Machine/sampler then a Sampler/drum machine. I was wanting to do more indepth sampling, longer samples of key-pads etc..along with using the drum machine functions. This also is my sole sequencer, and I'm not thrilled completley with the 2KXL sequencer features..and know the 4K has made some major improvements.

So the local GC store said they could get me the 4K w/ 60gig HD and CD for $1950.00. I can probably get $600 - $700 for my 2K..

Oh yeah, so my question was , Do you need a lot of bug spray for the 4K or will a few swats do the trick -

OS 1.45 is solid We just want all the promised features added but this 4000 is HOT as far as it being compared to anything in its class..it still wins hands down......I think Akai will surprise us greatly this year...don't forget the company had financial issues and survived them which is a good sign...I used to have the 2kXL and never had a prob with it....maybe you just have a bad unit????? The OS is solid on it.....Try the 4000 all the features will make things much better for you than the 2kXL...its like comparing a Chevy S-10 pickup to a Cadillac Escalade..which one do you want to drive???

The AKAI representatives are right. The MPC2000 was designed when the standard sampler combo consisted of a drum machine sampler and a rack sampler. The MPC was for percussion sounds. Musicians used it for more than just drum sounds, but that wasn't what AKAI had intended. The drum machine and rack sampler functionality was combined in the MPC4000.

OS 1.45 bugs aren't going to stop you from making great music. By all means get a 4000 if you have outgrown your 2000XL and you want to stay with AKAI Hold on to your 2000XL for a while, if you can afford it. These two MPCs sound different. You might miss the crisp drum sound of your 2000XL

By the way, the MPC4000 with a 60 GB hard drive is old inventory. This isn't a major concern, but AKAI was putting in 80 GB hard drives no later this summer 2003, maybe as early as spring 2003. For the price GC is offering (hopefully on a factory sealed box) this can be a worthwhile savings.

what about the sound differences between the 2000XL and the 4000 ?
do the sounds sound cheap on a 4000 or does it sound different (and how different does it sound)?

The samples don't sound cheap; they sound different. The MPC4000 has a balanced, flat response curve. This makes the samples sound more "clear", as you might have heard them described recently in the MPC1000 forum. Expect to rework your old files if you want them to sound crisp or grimey. They will never sound quite like your MPC2000XL, however.

from your standards, do you think the sounds sound good or not on the MPC 4000 ?

at 24. 96Khz, the world sounds good to me.

Listen Fella....... I sold my SP1200 and my MPC60 with 3.10 Roger Linn OS(makes it a 3000 basically) after getting the 4000 because I found my self not using them...Needless to say I got $1500. for the SP and $1350. for the 60 which in turn covered more than the cost of my 4000 which I bought used off of someone who didn't know how to use it for $2000 with ADAT optinon, 60gb HD and CD-R. I had a 2000xl in 99' when it first came out and loved everything about it except the fact its built like a tin can (flimsy when tappin on the pads)....I can tell you honestly all the Talk about the swing being different between MPC models is total C-R-A-P....the sequencer always feels the same, the processor is the only thing that makes it better and the 4000 is the best yet aside from our complaints about Akai not releasing OS's fast enuff.....like I said theyre crawling out of financial troubles like most companies that survived our recent economic slump. If you follow the market you'll see all the indexes were up about 25-30% this year's end so of course Akai surviving and releasing a quick seller like the 1000 will only help us get our needed OS updates as Akai can now sink more into OS development..........I think their silence is also due in part to the fact they didn't want people to panic as they hit bottom which was smart..........I've worked for a few corporations and silence has always been Golden in times of turmoil.....I believe in my investment in the 4000 was worth it and I also believe unless Akai comes along with an MPC4000 Studio plus with way more FX and features this one aint gonna be beat for a While and they know it........Roland doesn't have a leg to stand on Vs. Akai...We got a proven sequencer and a legendary history....Slightly tarnished at the moment but a lil polish will buff that ugly scuff right out and the Consumers will forget all about this mess..............Go for the 4000 you wont regret it!!!

talking about the crispy XL drum sound compared to the 24/96 sound of the 4k is a rather daft move, I own both and the 4k bangs out the sharpest highs clear lows and banging mids, sounds 10 times better that the xl it just sounds the biz cuts through the mix and is extreamly detailed in its sound, sorry mate not trying to show you any disrespect but that statement was wack,..
