MEMORY FOR AKAI MPC4000

I have a question regarding memory. I want to get 256mb 168pin pc133. Somebody told me it had to have chips on both sides is this true? Also where is the best place to buy them and what should I look for? Thanks!

From what i know of memory, Chips on both side is a manufacture layout not a MPC requirment. As long as its the right memory for it you'l be fine with 1 or 2 sided sticks

Thanks for the answer. I was looking in the book and it said something to the fact: 256mb x 8 type DIMM is not supported. 128Mbit X16 type is recommended. What the heck does this mean? I'm new at this.

Its the Spec of memory you need to buy for your sampler! Theres a variety of Memory available on todays market ranging in size and speed.

Just follow the instructions an you'l be fine

I tried 2 x 256m single sided chips and it read them as 400m max. Replaced them with double sided and a full 512 meg registered correctly.

in fact, the basic requirement for MPc 4000 memory modules is to have 16 (or less) MB chips

so the memory modules that could work on the MPC are composed of 16 chips for a 256MB module, at least 8 chips for a 128MB module, and so on

to get more technical, the MPC memory controller can't handle memory chips with a size greater than 16MB, that is the key element of the limitations

(you memory modules has to support CL 2 too)

So does CL2 mean Double Sided?

CL2 refers to the number of clock cycles before the data begins to flow after a command is received, such as the Read command. The lower the CL number, the faster the memory. CL2 is actually faster than CL3. BUT this does not mean you will see the difference by swapping two modules. It is so small that even on a PC you will not notice the difference. Simply adding more memory to any device results in a performance gain.

Device specs have to be matched to memory, or the device and module will not work properly, if at all. If you place a CL3 memory module into a device that requires a CL2 module, there is a timing mismatch. Usually, the device will not recognize the memory. Sometimes other effects are seen, such as just half the memory being recognized.

I bought a 256mb memory stick in the UK with the above spec and it seems to work perfectly. I'm sure the crucial web site caters for US buyers. Price varies from vendor to vendor but what I can say is the memory was on my door step the next day.

Crucial Technology is a good supplier. Inside the US you are better off buying through eBay because the cost is substantially less than Crucial. The eBay shipping charge is $5. ($10 outside the US) The Crucial overhead charge is $25 (tax + shipping) for US residents.

Yeah, you're probably right... but I have seen a lot of people get rid of there MPC4000 and some have jump over to the Roland. I just wish AKAI had made it so you could burn your Audio CD. Just a wish.
