Hard Drive Size Limit?

I'd love to slap a huge drive in my 4k, but I'm unsure of any size limitations; anyone know of any?

I had heard at some point somebody was having problems with a 160 gig. I got a 120 gig....and it works fine. After formatting though, you only end up with about 111gig. That's way more space than you'll need. I loaded up about 35-40 sample CDs onto the hard drive and I still got something like 95 gigs left! The one thing I can't understand is why aksi didn't go with firewire or USB2 rather than the USB1 standard. Do you know how long it takes to transfer 13 gigs over USB (don't forget to include all the times when aksys freezes up and you have to restart it)?

Thanks... I haven't received my 4k yet, so I haven't experienced all this, but my day has been considerably darkened. USB1 is a joke. It's alright for a keyboard; file transfer, though...

Ok, here's another question:

Could you install a removable hard drive bay into this thing? There goes all your file transfer problems right there...

I don't see why not> I'm gonna try that when I get a chance - it will make backing up the drive and transferring grand pianos a lot quicker

i have the LE, 80gig external USB and have never had any problems. i've moved 10 gigs in something like 40 seconds....dunno what you're doing that takes so long.

the difference really : USB1= 400 USB2= 480

80 mbps, that's it. i transfer at 380-390 regularly.

anyway : the whole point being that you don't need to worry bout it.

AKsys. has never frozen on my Athlon 1200, and transfer is a breeze.

i do notice some problems if you're computer hibernates while connected : but that's all avoided with connecting, transfer and disable.

if you're system is crashing MAD T, i've found that sweeping daily with this program http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ gets rid of a lot of data miners which flake out your system.

Actually USB 1 is 1.5Mbps-12Mbps where USB2 is 480 Mbps. I think you're getting the k/sec number confused with the Mbps number... it's different units. USB2 is even faster than the curent generation firewire 1.0.

10 gigs in 40 seconds?? that is extremely fast. I think you might have your numbers switched up. That means you were trasmitting files at 250 Megabytes per second!

So you have a USB hard drive connected directly to your MPC? I am transferring my files on my PC through the USB connection using ak.sys.

I only have problems transferring files when I do large amounts. If I transfer 1 gig at a time no problem.... If I queue up about 5 gigs, after awhile the whole computer stops responding. I know there has been problems with the akai USB MPC4000 driver. People would have issues transferring large files.

didn't take into account the formatting of the drive : thought i'd taken up 11 gigs with a file > did a PROPERTIES search on it = 5.6mb.

IM SORRY : 40 sec = 5.6mb....
