What's up. It's been forever since I've been on this forum. I've been working on an idea, wanted to see what people think of it.
Okay. I was composing music for some cable channels, and started using my friends' music within the productions because it fit well. I ended up licensing my friends' songs to the stations for a couple of things, splitting the dough 50/50. I had a bunch of music and a decided to start a music "library". I signed about five people and have about 200 tracks.
What I noticed looking at these other library services is that they are just terrible, really bland stock music. So I thought it would be a worthwhile service to have a library that is full of quality material - in fact I think some of the stuff I have is better than what the industry puts out. I'm looking to make a collection of only the hottest material across a range of styles, and pitch the library to people like HBO, Showtime, Indie Films, Commercial Films, etc. TV, etc. I want to try to stick to quality productions as much as possible. I should also mention that my friend made me a java application - it's a music search program, it sits on a hard drive, allows people to search tracks by tempo, style, etc. Very useful tool.
The business part of it I'm still working out so feedback is appreciated. Generally, the deal is a 50/50 split for licensing and I'd retain 25% of the royalties for the placement (i.e. when your song airs on tv or the internet you receive royalties from ASCAP/BMI. I'd retain these royalties ONLY for placements my company makes...anything else you do with the track has nothing to do with me. It's a non-exclusive arrangement.
Second, I'm playing with the idea of allowing "restrictions". This is where it gets tricky. Let's say you made a song and didn't want it on TV. You don't like TV. Or you thought the song was so good that it would ruin it if it was on TV. You could select "I need to clear it" next to the "TV" button under your track when you (hypothetically) submit songs to my company. Then this particular track doesn't get submitted directly to TV stations, instead I keep it on my end for special requests, where you would have to yay or nay the usage.
That's really a lot of info to drop at once - I know I haven't been on here in forever so I apologize. Just trying to get feedback and opinions before I jump into this shizz....
