True that! Gather up some of your friends and create a street team. Pass out some demos, stickers, flyers, etc. How old are you? If youre older than 18, ask someone thats under age (cause they got high school access) to promote some of your ish in the local high schools.

get yourself a sheet and a pen as well, b/c you'd probably want to do mailing lists as well...

and of course, maybe even a small boom box(in case someone wants to hear your music on the spot), cause if you don't got the music to hear, how will cats take you seriously...

other than that, good luck with the grind man.

small tip: college radio as well is a good outlet

get stickers poster etc. to get your name out. make some snippit cd's or tapes
hand them out, tell all your friends to tell their friends that you have the best record out there, We used to spray our name and the name of the new release all over town, so everybody knew, (but thats illegal) go to your local record stores ask them to put the cd on display or have it played in the stores if it are no big corporation record stores the won't mind. Get your internet stuff going... if you don't have a site have aan local music website do a article or an interview with you... bang it in your caR WHEREEVER YOUR GO windows down drive slow rep your ish give your friends some cd's to sell...

when we were kids in highschool and junior high, the older music-cats would always give us their tapes/cd's and stickers to rock.

we were just excited to be in "the know" or feel like we were part of something... believe it or not, most high school kids will post up all your stickers/posters rock word of mouth, and wear your gear, simply if you give them it... and they like the stuff...

the key is getting it to the ringleader of one group of kids, and having him handle it all...

then you could break him off with an extra 50.00 a month, or some swedes, or whatever else u think he'd be cool with... maybe just a pat on the back is cool in some cases, where they look up to u.

i've seen hundreds of stickers and posters in a key-area, just by one set of high school kids who got put on something by one guy who made friends with them...

explore your options, and yes -

the street team is key.

what do yall feel about giving away CD at record stores.... you know like free PROMO... FREE CD with like ten cuts... The only reason why I would consider something like giving away hard work is because of sample clearence issues... comments?

By thefirehooligan Sun Jan 21, 2007 3:54 am
Bro even if your giving it away from free, the samples not being cleared can come bite you in the ass due to once you release it to the public even for free, its not "Fair use" anymore.

Giving away 3-4 tracks promo copys is cool, throw some teasers on myspace, local hiphop and music boards.

im building my crews new websites, and its going to have new tracks on it every week. some for listen only and some for download.

We make money from our shows, not so much the albums or mixtapes. But we do make some, and gaining a fan base takes time.

Street Teams are the shit, our street team is us. I have a college radio show, have freinds at the local radio station that bumps our shit at night on his show and his DJ gigs at the big clubs. i bump it on my show and at my own gigs. Pass copys of to every DJ i know from all around.

Get on the hustle

if its your material your handing out, be prepared because people will test you (either because their genuninely interested, or they just want to be dicks). especially if your an mc or your hosting a event or something. If your able to spit a quick 16 off the top, it will help you immensely when you come across people who want to test you.
