Selling your album internationally?

Ill get right to the point.... I make electronic/video game music as well.. and would like to market it in uk, france, italy, most of all japan... does this process only happen when you are backed by a major label? just wondering if its possible to sell your album in other countries... i think there is an itunes japan though??

any feedback on this, you music business guru's??
