Copyright..

Yo... Just want to know, I'm starting to get a couple of MC's wanting to put some vocals on my beats for their CD's or mixtape. But I'm not sure how to protect myself from copyright stealling... How do you guys protect your stuff??? I need some advices before I get ripped off here!!

You could add a repetitive sound or voice sample track (can be your own voice) and let it play every 20 seconds or so on a low volume, so it wouldn't interrupt the mc's flow but still protect your work. Kind of like promotional copies are distributed, you know.
Also, if you are sending an mp3 file for starters, convert it into low bit rate, like 128 kbps, so that some high frequencies are a little blurred.
That's how I do it most of the time.

A note about copyrights - your work has copyrights the moment you put it into any fixed format. That's what the copyright act of '76 gave us. Submitting your work to the copyright office makes it easier to claim your rights, as well as allows you to get your court fees back if it comes to blows and you win. But if you recorded it the copyright is already there. Proving it is a separate issue.

Fill out a SR (Sound Recording) form and send it to the copyright office in Washington. Google the form and you'll find the address as well.
