Most of the hiphop producers started as some kind of crew. Premier-> Gangstarr Pete Rock-> Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth, The Holy  J Dilla -> Slum Village, Dr. Dre -> NWA, RZA-> Wu-Tang Clan.

U have to prove urself as a producer before people will approach u the make beats for them. Being part of a crew is a nice tool to get some recogintion. RZA was smart with this concept. Break through as a crew with the Wu in '92, get every mc's in different labels and start solo careers. United we stand, divided we fall.
