I'm a born again Christian who has been definately studying different styles of music and where they came from. One interesting note as I'm looking at the Sugar Hill Gang's self title'd debut. Michael Wright "wonder mike" is shown in the record notes as, "being a born again Christian and loves reading his bible". Now one thing that I believe as a Christian is that all forms of artistic expression and creativity are birthed in the heart of God, and then when the time comes are released through people on earth. Christians use "Praise" and "Worship" as expressions of music to give Glory to God. "Praise" is a more rhythmical tempo focused expression. When I'm praying and praising God without instruments or music I take a tambourine or a maracca and just get the tempo and speak in tounges, pray, and sing to God. I believe Hip Hop came out of the heart of God as a modern expression of "Praise" a rhymically focused form of music, that has the God inspired intension of getting people into a rhythem together and a focus. In the spirit realm when Christians Praise God its like a breaking annointing, meaning that what the devil has built up that is binding, wicked, or stagnant. Such as sickness, addiction, sin etc., we use Praise to "Break" those things apart in the spirit realm and use that to "destroy the works of satan" as Christ commanded us. Now the problem with "Christian Hip Hop" I believe is, that even though God birthed out the essence of the music, and the original form, it basically was took over by the secular music world. In this the music took its focus away from God, and was thereby corrupted into what we hear on radio today. A focus on drugs, sex, etc. Now every time a "New Form" of music is released into the Earth such as Hip Hop. The Body of Christ fails to take note of its importance and relevance to the culture and world as a whole, and instead of taking ahold of the new music and applying it from the BEGINNING to Glorifying God. They fight over if the music itself is "evil" or "good", and let the secular music world take it over. Then after all the time it takes for Christians to argue over if the music is evil or good, the world has made the original music a mockery of its original form, and God has to release a "NEW MUSIC" that will catch the ear of the next generation. I believe that from rock and roll, psychedelic music, punk rock, heavy metal, hip hop, electronica, in every instance the Church of Jesus Christ has missed its God given opprotunity to see its chance to take a form of music in its infancy and craft it for Jesus Christ in a way that doesn't seem "Fake". So the issue right now is, we as Christians have already lost hip hop. Even when the best artist comes with a relevant album, it will almost always be taken as a "copy cat" of the secular version, because the secular artists took that musical blank slate that God offered His people and painted the most interesting pictures on it. Now the church is left with a little piece in the corner to do its thing in. And it does and should look to the world like the church is faking it becasue in essence they lost their portal of time to really make it relevant as a vessel of evangelism. But, for us who Believe in Jesus Christ the good news is, if we understand this and take note, and stay aware of what the Holy Spirit is saying. We can take the NEXT FORM, and the NEW SOUND that God is about to release in the Earth and make it Culturally Relevant from the Beginning, instead of Trying to catch up 10 years later to what the Secular world already did way better.

I don't believe that the best Christian Hip Hop has been heard yet & there is so many things that can be done in music that have yet to be tapped into. So I don't feel that Christian Hip Hop is a copy cat or 10 years behind at all. I think that it is on the verge of making very big leaps & bounds as far as getting an audience b/c the peole that are doing it are stepping their game up, which was one of the problems w/ Christian Hip Hop. There was always an audience for it but the product was not up to par untill now. With that said I agree w/ most of what you said. I feel it is the believers job to praise HIM in all types of music from rap, country, etc. I just don't think it is time to give up on Christian Hip Hop, but I do think that we should be leading the pack as far as the Next Form instead of playing from behind.

amen, i don't believe that everything God is doing in Holy Hip Hop should be given up on, but its much harder to come from behind than to lead. Its like another comment I read that said they respected Gospel because it sounded like it was from the heart, where most Christian Hip Hop sounds as if its a watered down version. I believe thats because Gospel was one of those New Sounds that God birthed in the Earth that the Church successfully grasped and began to use. That is a lot more respectable to secular people because it was birthed and created by the Church, sounds good to everyone, and they don't bash it in any way. If the Church takes the next form of music and applies it right like they did Gospel, then we won't have another argument like this regarding the next wave of music. You notice that the world can't copy Gospel, because the Message and the Music is One and the Same. That didn't happen with Hip Hop. The Message is separate from the Music. Some people would say this is the way its supposed to be, but really it makes the secular world look at Holy Hip Hop as a copy cat or watered down version of the original music. When I say we lost Hip Hop, we didn't lose all the elements of what it can do. Its still a very powerful and viable form of music thats still progressing. The blues is still progressing and so will every form of music. Its just that we who believe and claim to know the All Powerful God, should be so in tune with the Spirit that we are Prophets to the World in all areas of culture. When a Christian tries to empty out the cup of Hip Hop, wash it out, bleach it out, then put Jesus Lives on the outside and say look at my "Holy Krunk Cup".
The World takes a look at that and says hypocrite, liar, deciever. The reason is, is because it looks to them as if they invented the cup, and we are just robbing the form and putting a new label on it and trying to serve it back to them as something "New" when they had the New thing in the first place. Now another part I have to say is a dream I had recently,
relating to the sugar hill gang 1 of the members being Christian.

In the dream I was watching a hip hop awards show on tv. It was the sugar hill gang and they were on there doing the rappers delight. In the middle of the set they changed it to a Christian Worship Song. They did about half of the track, then faded into worship. I saw this man who was an unbeliever with tears in his eyes watching as God touched his heart through the music. I could tell as they in the dream were preaching the message of the cross, that something clicked with him and he was recieving it and was in agreement with it. They were saying, "God gave us this music lets give it back to Him".

Now that speaks to a lot of points here. One is that the original form was birthed by God, yet the world twists it into a hypocrite argument when Christians trying to package it back in its original packaging and give it to them. But, God is about to use that original form in its evoluted state and bring Hip Hop back to God's Glory before the Secular World.

Also that God has not given up on Hip Hop.

But, when the music switched to the Worship. It wasn't hip hop, in the dream the sound was totally unique and original. It wasn't like kirk franklin gospel, or holy hip hop. It was just like the sound of 1000 angels in the place revealing God to everyone.

So, I believe that Holy Hip Hop, will give way to the New Sound. It won't be called Holy Hip Hop, but what God is doing in the Holy Hip Hop world is opening people up to the possibilities and there are many prophets and intercessors grappling with these issues that will eventually bring the whole picture together. AMEN!!

I understand what you are saying completely now & I do agree. As long as we have Christian Hip Hoppers that are trying to copy what's being done on the radio ( using secular track, flows, etc.) there will be no respect for it, but if we can get past that & be original in what is being presented & make it sound good then I think it will go alot farther. There are a few cats out now that are doing it but it will take more than a few to get the type of movement that can truly change Hip Hop. I feel that the stage is being set for Christians to make a big impact in the industry. The "death of Hip Hop" (lack of good music, lyrics, everybody saying the same things over & over....) makes it a good time for quailty Holy Hip Hoppers to shine b/c the land is thirsty & if we have people that truly rep the LORD then I think it can be the breath of fresh air that can change the way people look at gospel rap & make it a bigger influence in the world & most importantly get the word of GOD out to a people who would otherwise not hear it.
Good points 777333
