sell their beats for? Such as beats thats used on mixtapes to beats that are on albums? For a good example, producer "Street Runner" produced "Gossip" for Lil Wayne that wasnt on the Carter 3, do you think he still got payed for that? Or like, if your an independent artist, and wanted to purchase a beat from timberland, how would you know what he charges?

It depends on so many things how much they get paid for a beat.
Ur a starter or not? Like Timba charges u lot more then an upcomming beatmaker for mixtape beat will receive.
Will the song be released or not? Does the producer keeps the owners/publishing rights? Will the song be a commercial succes and have a lot of radio play time?(royalties)

So it may vary from $1500 to..... I don't know.

timbaland made $22 mil in 08. divide that by the amount of tracks he sold/released and you'll have an idea of how much he charges for beats

A known producer will start at $500 (supa dupa hook up price) and it goes up form there to 6 figures+

The amount the producer charges is solely based on his/her own discretion as well as their reputation for having quality beats. Normally a producer will either sell a beat to an artist for a flat fee or recieve royalties from album sales. If the song is licensed for commercial use(TV show, Movie, etc.) then the producer will further recieve royalties.

RIght now industry is bad so people are charging what ever they can get. A few years ago it was not unheard of for big name producers to get $100,000 for a song or more.
