You can not copyright a band name. I trademark or servicemark title yes but not a band name. One person may use the name and become more popular with it. For example, if another artist wanted to use the name jay-z you would think of the popular artist with the name. This would not be good for marketing their songs. Although u can use the name. Can jay-z file a lawsuit? Yes, good lawyers can make shit look like gold. Financial power is on his side comparing to an up and coming artist. Note! Jay-z provides a service. As long as his lawyers are on retainer they can sue you till you are financially depleted. Thats one tactic, not to win the lawsuit but to wear down they're opponent. Look at gucci mane. How many nittis, capones, lil this lil that are out there. Only thing bandname.com can do is document that you have used the name since such and such date. Trust me, someone with a financial and legal edge can take your name and make it look like you owe them. The $15 site is not a scam, its over hyped. A $300 legal filing and a $500-2000 lawyer will put you in a better position. I should get paid for giving you this information. Just kidding, but yeah, I been down the same road. Its deeper when you are dealing with other countries. Register your name with a trademark or as a business service. This will prevent anyone from going but so far with the name. Just remember! You get what you pay for.
